My missus has an autistic brother. He's basically a genius and gets very bored very easily, being quite difficult to pacify. Like me except I'm not a genius and you can stick a mobile phone in my gob and I'll suck on it all day long. Metaphorically.

There was a wonderful story where his gran was around and the noise stopped. His mum lept up to find out what was going on and his gran said not to worry and to sit down. So later they wonder where he is and find that for the past... some time... he has been amusing himself in a bag of manure. His gran was told "your mistake, you're cleaning him up".

Never again was the sound of silence ignored.

Can't be that much of a genius... Despite being somewhat autie I'm nowhere near being a genius, but even I had the sense not to play in manure!!

    Re: Silence is golden...

He was bored and wanted to know what it felt like.

Can you ever say you've even had the intellect to consider that possibility?

Out of amusement I once did a screening test for Asperger's syndrome with my missus. She scored 3.

I scored 28. I can't remember what the cut off for Asperger's was on the test but I think I won.

I'm not even considering taking my carefully programmed personality to a professional as my travel insurance is expensive enough without having that on my medical records.

    Yes, I can.
I can also say I've been smart enough to extrapolate, and thus eliminate the requirement for direct experience...

There is no 'cut-off', as such. It's a spectrum and, assuming you did one of the generic online tests, it merely measures how likely you are to exhibit certain traits that are typically associated with (but in no way indicative or symptomatic of) various autism disorders.
People tend not to understand that symptoms and syndromes do not mean it's a disorder. To qualify as a disorder, your 'condition' must be severe enough that you cannot cope with basic daily tasks, like crossing the road on your own, washing and dressing yourself, cooking a meal, basic social interactions like buying something in a shop....

This is what [CENSORED]'s me off about all these people claiming to be autistic or have Ass-burgers these days, like it's some sort of excuse... Most wouldn't know an Autie if they got hit in the face by one, but they do one online test and suddenly they're Rain Man... same with things like The Good Doctor and other media portrayals - Every Autie is portrayed as a higher-functioning savant genius. None are ever the non-communicative types like Carly Fleishmann, for example.

In terms of these highly generalised questionnaires, the higher you score above 19 the more likely you are to favour certain traits. I score 36, incidentally. I'm still not autistic, though.

It shouldn't have any effect on your insurance whatsoever.
I guarantee you're not severely autistic in any way, as you have a job and a life and get on with it just fine - It is not a disorder.

You may, however, have certain personality quirks that the professional can help you to understand and find ways in which to cope with any difficulties caused by the quirks. I recommend a psychologist with particular leanings toward cognitive behavioral stuff.

I am my quirks. I am keeping them. Any difficulties usually can be suppressed with an appropriate amount of alcohol.

The addition of alcohol makes people far more accepting of quirks as they expect the booze is changing your behaviour when really I'm using the booze to change their perception of my behaviour.

It also gives my liver something useful to do.

    *Raises glass*

As for all taking the online test, if you want a laugh take Becks Depression Inventory. It's so over sensitive that it'll basically say anyone who isn't happier than a pig in.... that.... is in need of hospital admission. These screening tools are just that - they highlight those who may need a professional assessment and as is quite sensibly stated above it all depends on whether something is actually causing a problem or not.

    Like my drinking.

It causes no problems (I have regular liver function tests) and allows me to actually sleep. Therefore is it a problem? 3 beers a night probably isn't but a bottle of vodka a day probably is.

Alcohol more often tends to make autistic difficulties worse in several ways, or buries them like it does many other issues.
It may or may not be a problem, depending on how it impacts your life, but you're always far better off addressing the underlying issues than hiding them in a bottle.
