Ok so I've found the tools I used and uploaded them all for anyone that's interested in installing W7 to USB 3.0 hardware. The Windows 7 SP1 installer does not natively contain USB 3 drivers, only USB 2.0.
Sadly Intel removed their own tool from their website but the guide they created is very good so I felt it should be uploaded. If you are already familiar with DISM then this will be beneath you, but for the rest of us that rarely do it this is a fairly simple way. It will make more sense after the 1st time you perform it.

A breakdown of all the tools I uploaded, and where possible their original sources:

Obviously Hexites have common sense, but I have to state all tools are provided as is, with no guarantee's of any kind. While I have used them all with success, your experience may be different.
Some intuition will be required for AMD hardware.

If you want to be wble to keep up with hardware. I agree. It's why I went to Linux.

On the other hand, there is a valid case for some users at least, that if a given hardware platform does the job they need done, then (as has been said already) .... don't fix what ain't broke.

That is the case for mamy of my systems, and will remain so until either that ancilliary hardware (or software) no longer works, or until I no longer need that job doing. In my case, the latter rapidly approaches, and I hope and believe) my hardware will outlast my need.

If the hardware does need replacing before then, then I have a bigger problem than OS, and Linux-compatibility will be very high on my needs fir suitable replacement. But I don't expect it to come to that.

I'm far from a Microsoft fan, but this isn't something they can win so I at least understand their logic. Both systems sucked, but the old way was more friendly to people building botnets.
I take that point. Always have.

But ..... MS coulsd have addressed that with an option to disable auto-updates only accessible to someone with the incliniation and kniwledge to find it, and with a suitable warning screen for anyone trying to turn it off.

Ultimately, my machines are MY responsibilty, not Microsofts, especially when they do something that has the potential to, without warning, right-royally bork my system, right when I have a deadline.

So as far as I'm concerned, MS deliberately chose to try to override MY control of MY machine, whether I like it or not.

Setting a default is one thing, but trying to prevent me opting out of auto is utterly another.

Besides, I don't believe that's why they did it. It was for their convenience, not mine, which is why I rejected even a "free" upgrade to Win 10. And don't for a moment regret it.
