I wouldn't give my bank account number out to anyone on gumtree. To get them to BACS it to you you have to give them your name and account details. Not a smart move to give those to a complete stranger IMO.

i've had more buyers not turn up than turn up after agreeing a sale, most of those that do turn up suddenly want to renegotiate the price on arrival, not a pleasant experience, though have had the odd buyer that was great, lottery really

That is pretty much my experience. I will add that I often get abuse from the people who ask for it to be sent. Either from saying no or from giving them a postage quote. So I now ignore them completely.
I will say now that eBay are offering £1 selling fees I've started to sell again on there knowing I'm going to lose a lot less than the usual 10% fee. AKA daylight robbery.
Every 2/3 weeks I get a notification for 100 auctions of £1 fees. So I have all my items ready for when that day arrives. It's a bit of a pain but I refuse to lose £50 for selling a high value good.

    Re: Selling on gumtree

On Gumtree, I only offer collection only unless they somehow want to accept to pay by bank transfer, as this is the only method that they can't really scam with. Paypal Goods and Services is easily exploitable by saying they received an empty box or wrong item etc, and the Friends or Family payment can still be charged back. On forums where the buyers and sellers have rep I am fine with any payment method.

I had a few people try this out with me, but I did not accept their lower offers. I live in the middle of nowhere, and they wasted time and fuel to get to me, so they all ended up paying the previously agreed price.
