Not a theory I've heard of before.

They did it in Goldfinger, so it must be true

It was a thing back in 1995, before 'Snopes,' when open mailing lists and Usenet provided rich veins of fake news and viral memes, a decade or so before the maketing men got online and coined the labels.

I assumed everyone knew that when a wing creates lift it does have a good chance of condensing moisture, and that at height it will show agaisnt the blue sky as a long cloud.
Like most good conspiracy theories the chemtrails hoax conflates fact and fiction. The original Chemtrailers did not dispute the science of contrails, that would be silly

The crux of the claim is (only) the long thin contrails that hang around at higher altitudes are chemtrails. Clearly these can not be formed the same way as the short fat contrails that disperse quickly at lower altitudes. No, there must be some mysterious mechanism at work. Only a fool would refute that B52s spraying Agent Orange over 'Nam' left long thin trails in the sky. It stands to reason then (which it doesn't) that long thin trails left hanging around after long haul jet airliners pass over (at altitudes similar to B52 operations,) must be 'chemtrails' too.

Please can anyone enlighten me further, on the utter nonsense that this subject purports to describe?
The (alleged) back story behind the emergence of the Chemtrail conspiracy is stranger than the fiction. The hoax was apparently concocted by a couple God feerin farmers in Ohio, with too much time on their hands, too little money in their pockets, an unhealthy interest in biological terrorism and irked by 'the man' objecting to people driving around with bubonic plague samples in the glove box.
    http://goodsky.homestead.com/files/evolution.html

The most active ingredient in a chemtrail is good ole fashioned snake oil. The Lynmouth flood was a tragedy brought on by the British weather. The JFK assassination is a different kettle of fish altogether. Pre-dating Watergate with a cast of dodgy actors and sprinkled with dubious official explainations, it would be strange if it turned out not to be a conspiracy.

Absolutely bugger all to do with wings and everything to do with exhaust emissions from engines which are hot and condense into vapour in the cold air.

You're right, contrails are caused in this manner, but there's also a wing vortex condensation that occurs at lower altitudes under the right conditions of temperature and humidity... It's often captured in pictures of fighter jets with vapor trails appearing at the wing tips. They aren't contrails, but it's easy to see where someone could make that link..

Surely those wing vortex effects are pretty short-lived, though? Or at least, the visible manifestations are? Tight turns, high speed?

I did see some interesting videa, a few years back (done at Heathrow, IIRC) of the size and scale of the overall disturbance of big jets taking off, done with some kind of smoke generator, and the air disturbances are massive. But by and large, not visible without the 'smoke' (which I assume wasn't actually smoke).

Re: Chemtrails ?.. are you serious?

sadly I know someone who is suckered in by all this conspiracy theory crap. It's depressing. She sold a load of her stuff - for a complete loss- and started hoarding tins. Then she got massively depressed and the more isolated she became the more she stayed inside, online, reading. reading BS. Reading unsubstantiated, uncorroborated drivel. But each of these sites references each other to give an veneer of legitimacy which some susceptible people swallow hook line and sinker. What is most ironic is that websites telling their viewers to "think, question, don't trust the government" also want those same viewers to "swallow, conform, don't question our opinions [lies]". We're trying to help her but she seems to doubt anyone telling her she might be misguided "because that's what they [the government] want you to believe!" You couldn't make it up.

It is utter guff, how on earth they are allowed to keep doing this when it is not just a laugh but actually harmful I do not know. It's the same with anti-vac'cers and the like. It frigging matters. Shut the morons down. Or at least bombard their websites with ad banners to proper information in such a way as they can't escape having them.

Contrails form most noticeably on military jet wings. There is no surplus weight, space, or desire for any chemical deployment systems on those wing tips. Every gram counts and they are as narrow as they can justify. How are people so dumb?

Re: Chemtrails ?.. are you serious?

To be fair, the kind of people who get sucked in wholesale are those who already have the paranoid ideation and the websites just give them something to hook onto. The manifestation is one of the website being the cause but it's more an effect. In days gone by these people would be isolated in their homes and wouldn't come out but the internet allows them to stay isolated and contrbute to a site like that. That does lead to reinforcement / some legitimisation of the ideas which is obviously bad but the underlying mental illness is not caused by the website.

In my experience the anti-vaccine lot are stupid, arrogant idiots who do not understand statistics. They see the occasional case of autism developing roughly at the time of the MMR vaccine. Given the MMR vaccine should be universal, this no longer becomes a discriminator but they use it as such. Random chance means you will get someone beginning to express autistic characteristcs roughly at the time of the MMR jab, because it's universal. You could just as easily do the same with "he went to the toilet on his own for the first time and came out like this!" Then Andrew Wakefield came along and legitimised this stuff by lying, cheating and being the root cause of many a nearly-eradicated disease outbreak. There are certainly potential side effects from vaccines but they are well tested and we know what they are. Even if it did cause autism in some people, how much does that matter? The number of lives saved far exceed any risk but we have become so distant from the real nature of disease and live in a world where modern medicine can cure almost anything with a single tablet.

We also live in a world where people think it's just fine to be utter pricks to those who dedicate their lives to help them. A group of police officers was kicked out of Starbucks because a customer complained that they made him feel "unsafe". Nurses get punched every day. The fire brigade get called out and attacked. And the armed forces are obviously evil. We have this wonderful society that thinks it is just fine to attack people for their virtues or for using those virtues to help others which is about the most cruel you can be to someone.

The acceptance of this behaviour enables people who want to spread these conspiracy theories to go wild as they can proclaim that the military are evil and trying to poison everyone or that the NHS is evil and part of an evil plot to make more autistic people. It serves to make those same people who dedicate their lives to serving others eventuially go "sod it, if you think I'm screwing you over, I might as well actually do it and gain something".

Wings, propeller blades, rotors, car aerofoils and anything else that works by creating a difference in pressure. They're all contrails, unless they spiral, at which point they're seemingly referred to as vortices.

For our readers who believe chemtrails are real:

You can be sure to protect yourselves from them. How? Just send me £159.99 a month and I'll tell you, in long, drawn out sentences...

If you don't respond within 20 minutes of seeing this, a bad thing could happen.

In this case, these are vortices, which cause a pressure drop by increasing the speed of the air as it spins, at the wingtips and nose, with the fog across the upper surface coming from simple accelerated flow. The perfect time to see similar is during takeoff on a cool humid day. Around the wings, particularly the flap and spoiler intersections of an airliner, each small protuberance in to the airflow can be enough to create a small vortex that will create a small trail. In the right conditions it's amazing to see.

I think bluebell is referring to the exhaust condensate vs short lived pressure change effects.

Re: Chemtrails ?.. are you serious?

And there are different types of vortices that have different effects. Leading edge vortices are one thing and then you get one that are a result of shear forces. Then you have the boundary layer to consider. All of this is basically the effect of inerta of the wings on the air. I was using simlar principles to work out why our Bernoulli calculations were invalid in certain situations.
