Summer 19 - Your use of Facebook

How much do you use Facebook in 2019 and how highly do you rate it as an experience?

This will be a tricky thing to quantify, so please back up your Score with a little explanation.

    Scores are from:

1 - Facebook is my everything and I use it hugely for many many things, every day, and frankly every waking hour
    to
5- Never use it and won't, irrespective of whether I have in the past

I think a score of 3, middle ground, would be somewhere around the "quite enjoy it, check regularly but happy to not look for a few days if I'm busy"

This excludes your Instagram or WhatsApp use guys. But it DOES include Facebook Messenger use (as it's still seperate to the others in theory)

I use it to view the humblebrags of people I used to go to school with who I don't care about, and fact check certain family members' Britain First postings.

Use it to keep in touch with overseas acquaintances and certain family members, who for some stupid reason have 'principles' that render them incapable of using things like WhatsApp.

I use it a lot to buy and sell hifi, quite useful not having to rely on ebay

Plus with 15 grandkids between us, Sally & I have a lot of family to keep in touch with !
    Cheers, David

    4. Check it daily for messages or event invites from others who use it as their preferred communication platform. Haven't installed the app and haven't posted anything in years so it's basically a glorified email inbox now - even though I check it regularly it's generally a 30 second job.

Re: Summer 19 - Your use of Facebook

Very rarely to keep up with distant family friends, but I rarely post, and I have been removing sites that I used to ‘like’ to cut down targeted adverting. Generally I find I’m depressed by the poor quality of ‘discussion’.

I tend to give brands or organisations that ask me to ‘like’ them a wide berth.

Similar to this. Uses to begrudgingly use it to keep up with family, but now they use WhatsApp I've deleted all my other social media accounts. Ideally I'd move them all into signal or telegram but baby steps.

Re: Summer 19 - Your use of Facebook

Facebook itself? No, never have, don't currently and my intention is .... never will.

Other stuff owned by Facebook? No, except, just possibly and in the future, WhatsApp. Currently trying to decide if it's secure enough (from FB) (* note) and if my likely minimal use, with immediate family and maybe at most a friend or two, justifies something I'm inherently not happy about.

(*Note: My current understanding, and I haven't really checked, is that barring unforeseen hacking of end-devices, message content is end-to-end encrypted and secure, but anaytics on contacts, contact lists, etc, aren't.

I also haven't yet read their T&Cs orcprivacy policy, but I imagine onky one reason why FB woukd buy WA).

Re: Summer 19 - Your use of Facebook

If you have concerns about WhatsApp (which is very good - which I had no concerns about until they were bought by Facebook) you might want to consider Telegram, which offers similar facilities and is (currently) independent.

I tried Telegram and thought it was very good, the problem that I actually had though was convincing others to use it hence why I am still using whatsapp :/

use it for groups and activities, quite frankly am bored of looking at peoples dinner and airport pints. There are a few exceptions but meaningful discussion of any kind appears to give Facebook a wide berth.

True - it doesn’t have much traction in the UK and people that have WhatsApp don’t see the need to download and install another messaging service.
