    Banking without mobile.

Just contemplating the 'changes to regs' new security stuff/logon processes my bank/s & others are bringing in - they seem to be handling things fairly differently, one is changing their system considerably less than the other, for whatever reason. I suppose it's pointless looking about for whatever bank is currently less mobile focused & one just has to assume the continual poking you towards apps &c will go on?

    Re: Banking without mobile.

I can't bring myself to put any banking details on phone.
I'm happy with a traditional PinPad.

My bank tried to force my hand at using an App but I wasn't having it so asked for another PinPad. They automatically cancelled my existing PinPad because I hadn't responded to some letter. I hate this assumption that they think they know everyone. Give people the option to change but don't force them 😠

I wouldn't give Google, Facebook or any Social type media my financial info.

I've started taking £200 out the bank so I know where I am money wise each month, it's all too easy to use contactless blindly.

    Re: Banking without mobile.

I hate to say it but the time is coming where there won't be a choice. My backup plan for that time is a mobile that is used for mobile banking and NOTHING else. Nothing at all That phone won't even be turned on unless I want to do some banking, and the rest of the time, it'll be securely locked away.

Meantime, right now, I am managing to exist quite happily without either mobile or online banking. I have found that, about 99.99% of the time, I just don't need either.

But when I hit that other 0.01%, like today when I had to pay a cheque in, banks are making it harder and harder, with ever-increasing automation in branches, and that's assuming you can still find a branch halfways locally that they haven't closed yet.

So while I'm hoping to keep on as I am, I'm not optimistic about it long-term, and doubtful in the medium-term. And it sucks.

And just as you've decided to keep your money under the mattress, cashless society will get you.

I run 2 phones already, so this would mean a 3rd, which is another sim to put some money on*, & remember to make a chargeable transaction occasionally, & top its battery up, blah blah.

I don't have a local bank branch & trying to avoid online banking altogether would be ridiculously inconvenient if not impossible. The only mobile number I've had to give until now is one I could dispose of immediately (because it's 'compulsory' to give but in practice is just for certain processes I haven't needed). My other account hasn't asked for a number at all.

Adding an extra security step is one thing, but one of my banks is chucking their existing logon process altogether, so that's one more set of numbers that are now pointlessly engraved in one's brain. No doubt will still be trying to use them for some unrelated purpose in the future when one's grip on all these numbers is going altogether..

*ok you could say it's a small price to pay for convenience but it still grates to have to put money on a phone I didn't want & will never dial or text out on, just to keep it alive.

    Re: Banking without mobile.

Well I largely wrote my post as 'agrees with Saracen and will be doing the exact same thing by having a dedicated mobile' - just with a bit of extra grumbling thrown in. Saying I don't really want a separate phone, doesn't mean I will hand over a number I already use, I will use a separate phone & lump it, grudgingly. So yours are/will be my methods too, as far as this specific instance goes.

Except I've caved before your 'absolutely no choice' point, which ofc is a fairly major difference. (tells self to stop obsessively clarifying).

    Re: Banking without mobile.

I think everybody reaches their own "cave in" point ..... and for some (a lot, probably, but not you or me) it's very quickly, even with enthusiasm for the convenience mobile banking gives. And fair enough.

If I had the banking needs today that I had, say, 20 years ago, I might have too.

Thing is, regardless of what banks encourage or permit, my current banking needs are pretty minimal. And given that, the "convenience" gains are minimal too.

Essentially, I have a handful of paying-in transactions, usually a bank transfer but an occasional cheque too, and a periodic cash withdrawal for day to day expenses. A few other bits and bobs and I'm sorted.

Some of that I could even do a different way, and not bother with a bank account at all. And I'm tempted, I have to say.

I think the main push is to enable 2FA. Not sure if some/many/all banks allow you to use RSA keys or similar instead though.
