The great tragedy of Trans American flight 209 from Los Angeles to Chicago, was averted when a passenger, and retired US Airforce officer Ted Striker was able to safely land the Boeing 707, with the help of a Stewardess, after the flight crew had become incapacitated by Food Poisoning.

EDIT: Although IMDB shows the release date as 2nd July 1980 so not quite 40 years.
