Sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway

March 20th 1995, only 3 months after the devastating Kobe earthquake, 5 members of the Aum Shinrikyo cult released sarin nerve agent at locations all over the packed Tokyo subway system, at the peak of morning rush hour. Although only a tiny drop of sarin is needed to kill an adult, the sarin released on the subway was very slow to evaporate, and only 12 people were killed as a result. However, many thousands were injured and still suffer its effects even today.

Aum still exist but have changed their name, they actually now sell computers would you believe. There is one in nipponbashi in osaka, the computers are dirt cheap as they dont pay wages.

If you read Haruki Murakami's book Underground it has a lot about the attack (nearly all interviews with victims) but also a lot about Aum itself. The majority of those in Aum joined to follow the teachings as a branch of Buddhism and the live the life of a reununciate. However, Shoko Asahara became violent over time and initiation rituals started to involve torture and drug experimentation on human guinea pigs. Eventually he ordered the gas attacks (for which he is now on death row). Many members criticise him as he chose only his most avid followers to carry out the attacks, those who through their time in Aum had lost any morals and respect for people living secular lives.

The size of Aum is what amazed me. They built their own weapons, they made there own sarin in massive vats and had all sorts of other branches (including an animated cartoon division).
