Re: What would you do with a lottery jackpot win?

Interesting, Ttask. I'd never thought about that perspective. Then again, I've probably spent more time thinking about yachts in the last 2 or 3 days than the last 50 years.

I suppose from that perspective, the owner doesn't much matter, as I can't see many billionaire owners doing their own crew or staff interviews, other than perhaps personal assistants, etc. If I had that type of yacht, I'd be about as likely to do that as I would be to either drive it, or clean the engine room.
A lesson learned from PeterB about dignity in adversity, so Peter, In Memorium, "Onwards and Upwards".

To be fair, it doesn't matter so much as many such yachts get sold on comparatively often. Johnny Depp's yacht was originally bought off someone else and then sold to JK Rowling, who is now selling it again.

Within the industry, the yachts themselves are the celebrities, not the owners. Each yacht is nigh-on unique, and so are the experiences of crewing one.
Some owners do undertake the interviews personally, while others are far more hands-off. Many take the crew with them when they sell one and buy another, but an important thing to note is that many crew live aboard 24/7 while they're contracted. The owner might go ashore for a day, week or month, or only use the yacht a couple of times a year, but the crew live there, keep it maintained and secure. For that reason alone, it behoves the whole industry, from broker to steward, to know teh ins and outs of what they might next be dealing with, in the same way it behoves a soldier to know what the barracks and local towns are like at any base to which they might be posted, or the wards and residences for any nurse in the NHS.

A side benefit is that it's of interest to a lot of us penniless plebs too, in the same way we'll never own a McLaren F1 but still take great delight in watching one on Top Gear.

I would share it with my family and I would place a good part of it in an intelligent way to make the jackpot even more profitable!

I'd keep enough for a comfortable and fun life for my family (£5-£10M), but use all the rest (even if £50M plus) to set up a charity to rehabilitate and support homeless people (a significant number of which have significant mental health and substance issues) so that they can reintegrate into society.

Make sure those I love are comfortable. Buy a large (but not crazy mansion) house. Buy a small fleet of exciting electric cars. Then retire doing good things for others! I'd love to just fix things for fun.
    Trust

A guilty pleasure of mine over the last couple of years is Nick Burnham's Youtube channel, Aquaholic

He does video tours of everything from inflatable canoes to 60m superyachts. He also does video tours for Motorboat & Yachting (www.mby.com).

The format gets a bit samey - most of them are similar in design/features and it is somewhat detached from reality, because you find yourself thinking, "ooh, only £350k, that's quite the bargain" or "£1.5 million? I'd rather pay the extra 500K and get the the extra cabin and flybridge"; but it remains oddly compelling.

Another good channel is eSysman, an engineer who works aboard superyachts.
Boattest.com is alright and does quite good reviews, but is biassed toward American stuff. The Boat Show with Maurizio Bulleri has some interesting stuff, too.

You do occasionally find intriguing ones... I'm quite interested in the Green Line stuff and other boats with solar power. The Gulf Craft range of Nomad SUVs is really nice, and somewhat less like either a boat or an Italian hotel room.

Yeah I like esysman's channel too.

I'm with you on the Green Line and GC Nomad range.

Some of the Italian boats really over-do the style in place of practicality. Not that I'd turn one down, of course.

I actually would turn them down... if I had that kind of money. If not, I'd take the yacht, sell it and buy a Nomad!

What I liked about the GC was how the salon looked like a proper sitting room at home, rather than the lobby of the aforementioned Italian hotel. It looks comfy and like a place to relax, instead of just something expensive to show off to your party guests. Yachts for me are about more than just entertaining other rich people at cocktail parties. I also love an isolated helm/wheelhouse... long as it has good views around the boat.

A heli-pad is essential though, at least on my larger yacht, as my newly-rich self will need somewhere to park his Airwolf!!

Re: What would you do with a lottery jackpot win?

I would have a year-long round-the-world trip. Then I guess I would buy some property in Spain somewhere by the sea. If there is anything left I would invest that money in some shares.

Would have to be a larger house, more out in the countryside, a garage full of Group B rally cars another garage with some exotica, workshop and enough grounds to have my own little festivals :-)
