    What would you do?

Well guys where I work people are just expected to come in and work and lunch breaks are frowned upon. Over the bank holiday weekend I worked Saturday and had Friday Sunday and Monday off. My normal days off are Sunday and Monday so therefore I am due one extra day off and have volunteered to take off only a half day today much to by bosses disgust. What would you do?

Totally, tell him to shove it. You got terms & conditions in your contract?

How about find and better job and then tell him to shove it. Better way to do things.

no lunch breaks... I'm sure thats against the law as you need to have a certain amount of breaks depending on how long you are working. This is a requirement as you need food to fuel yourselves going all day and a rest to stop RSI occuring or flaming up.

If you work with a VDU then by law you are required to have breaks as they can affect your eyes over a period of time and even the hardened gamer like me has to have a break every now and again to stop my eyes watering

Im assuming his disgust is that you are due an extra half day off not that you have sprung it on him that you are going to take it today??

As WildMonkey says you are entitled by Working Regulations to take your lunchbreak - I know that many people work through but they cannont make you work through it. You should check out your rights - or better still I'll have a look for you tonight Ive got some stuff on Employment Law at home.

Sounds to me like ur boss is being a major ASS - everyone is entitled to breaks and holidays - its the law! (Not to mention the EU Directive on working hours!)

Unpaid overtime is one of the major factors that caused me to change jobs. We dont tend to take lunch breaks but they not frown upon as such.

There isn't much you can do about it apart form get job hunting. As monday was a bank holiday , unless your contract states otherwise , you should be entitled to a day in lieu ( arranged at a mutually convenient time with your boss ) - I had a lot of problems with this a couple of jobs ago where I was working on shifts - we had to fight tooth and nail to get our bank holiday lieu time.

Well Monday is my normal day off so it makes sense for me to just take half of today off, I should really have the whole day off. My other problem will be my 2 sales colleagues came in on Monday to work for him as a favor really and he will mention that. My contract does state that bank holidays are not to be worked as they are holiday. My manager did not work over the w/e either and he is on my side.
As far as getting a new job, no need really as we emmigrate soon to Vancouver.

lol well if your emmigrating does it matter if you piss people off?
Just take it. Also look up your contract and take maximum lunch hour every day from now on just to wind them up
