I've always thought the whole 'Presidential pardon' thing was a bit of a strange aspect of the US system. I mean, I know the president is the head of state as well as government, but issuing pardons at will...it just doesn't seem very democratic (or indeed, moral). More like the workings of an autocracy, imho...

In the UK a couple of government ministers (Westminster) and the First Minister of Scotland can invoke the royal prerogative of mercy in order to effectively pardon someone for their crimes and get them released from prison. However, I understand that it is very rarely used.

It is, and it's very political. The list of people Pardoned by different Presidents makes for interesting reading. Clinton, for example, pardoned Susan Rosenburg, a Weather Underground (Not the weather forecasting website) terrorist who attempted to blow up the US Capitol. She's now running fundraising for Black Lives Matter...
