    Anyone else into Tortoises? :D

Just curious since they're not that popular these days as pets. My g/f and I have 4, the latest arrived last weekend.

    We've got:

    1x Egyptian fully grown male,
1x Tunisian 2 year old (unsexed)
1x Greek 6 year old female,
1x Yellow foot female in the pic, who's approx 15!

More pics of the wee beasties once I've uploaded them.

Always been tempted but iirc they were quite expensive last time I seriously looked at getting one.

Yeah, they can be fairly pricey. Looking after them isn't too bad though, they eat weeds and veg and just need a bit of light during the day. Hermanns are a good starter for Tortoises and so long as you go to a breeder rather than a shop, you can get them reasonably.

I'd love one but they don't do anything much do they?.

They just potter about and as soon as the first sign on cold occurs they get extra food and then stuck in a box under the stairs for a few months, nothing exciting there if you ask me

Actually, that sounds like the definition of a highly-evolved lifeform to me - right down to having bipedal ape-descended servitors to get the extra food in question...

Not all species hibernate - only some of the Mediterranean species hibernate to escape the colder winter months.

As for what they do, they're like any reptile. They bask a bit, have a wander around looking for stuff to climb (yes, they climb!), eat a bit, crap a bit... like any other pet really!

As for where they do their business, it depends.. if you've got a smaller one then there's not a lot to deal with. Larger species can make a LOT of mess if they're eating well. However, they're usually creatures of habit - work out when they do their business and once they're done for the day you can have them wandering around the house.

As for them running away, they will if they can find a way. They're incredibly curious, and if they can see a way out of an area they'll keep trying to escape over and over. Since they also weigh a fair bit and are very strong (Mango the Yellow Foot above is nearly 5kg!) they can push through flimsy objects with ease and climb over stuff. You have to have a sturdy area to keep them in, especially if you let them loose in the back garden!

Aaawh I'd love one when I'm all 'grown up' and have my own garden. I loved to read 'Esio Trot' as a child and always grin when I see them
