Surely, in any sensible world, we need a blend of those with talent, but balanced by keeping a steady supply of new blood.

And in many ways, the market does decide who's on TV, but the simple expedient of deciding who we watch.

Unless, of course, you're suggesting that those that like familiar faces don't get a say, because I can guarantee that a lot of older people enjoy both familiar faces, and those with a similar background, and a similar range of life experience. That's why, up to a point, different shows and different radio channels appeal to different users.

Many years ago, I'd listen to Radio 1, or even Caroline. These days, it'll much more likely be Radio 4 or even (sometimes) LBC. Radio 1? Hell, no. Full of modern 'junk'.

What we need is a spread, and something for everyone, young or old.
