Amazon's beta MMORPG is causing GPUs (mainly 3090s) to die?!

This is a new one for me, Amazon's closed beta is killing GPUs potentially due to unlimited fps in the menus?
Seems a strange one that surely can't be because of a stupid reason like that? I can't imagine a GPU not throttling and then killing itself?

    Any ideas folks?

scalper sales on amazon drying up and they need to kick start the market again to get the "fulfilled by amazon" out of their warehouses?

Seems to be mostly one particular OC'd model (EVGA FTW3) which during menus and correspondingly extremely high frame rates is having an issue. This pops up on games from time to time (more usually 'why do I get coil whine in game x'?) to the point where some games now use framerate caps during menus - but an awful lot still don't. Luckily you can set global caps in the control panel to prevent this being an issue.

So, bad tuning in the GPU's power management and sounds like a clear RMA as it shouldn't do that. I remember Furmark taking out some cards before AMD and Nvidia tweaked the drivers to account for that sort of usage.

It does seem sloppy of the game to be driving the hardware that hard when just in the menu. Sounds like they have a frame rate cap now though.

Yeah, though it's a tricky line to tread - people have shown they are willing to pay more for a card that can run 3D just that little bit faster, even if running at that speed on a 'power virus' app would cause failure. Which has led to the proliferation of turbo type modes to try and allow different speeds but they're reliant on sensors/app detection. Throw in an unexpected load and/or component stress in a non-sensor-reportable way (something other than temp/power draw) and this can happen. But they'll learn from the RMAs and either not push so hard or beef up the failed component.

It's also poor coding in the game to have unlimited FPS in the menu.

Safest thing to do would be to force VSync, but you would have to do it from the NVidia control panel and not in the game. Personally I'd stay well away from it. Something like that requires me to see a post from the developers to say they've identified and fixed it.

    They have. Sort of.

They basically said that both internal testing and lots of beta testers hadn't seen a problem with the game so it wasn't their fault, but they capped the frame rate in the menu anyway. The wording just came off a bit rubbish to me, like the whinging users made them do stuff they didn't want to.

If they said something like "We haven't been able to reproduce this, but running flat out in a menu isn't best practice so we fixed that anyway" I think it would have come across better. Hopefully that is just someone with poor communication skills on the team rather than an actual poor attitude.

Looks Igor has written an article:
    https://www.igorslab.de/en/evga-gefo...-evga-problem/
(or the German version for those who wonder if writing style is lost in translation (it isn't):
    https://www.igorslab.de/en/evga-gefo...-evga-problem/)

    He reckons it EVGA only.
Aren't EVGA meant to be premium Nvida brand

Still EVGA is going to get big in the wallet when all these bricked up GPU start showing up on their doorstep. After looking at Amazon.ca, $3,000 to $4000 CDN. I wonder how much money they going to lose? I wonder if they going to sue the company that made the beta for their "money" back.

Most UE4 games also have that problem. Some devs can work this out but there are some games that have been out years with smaller dev teams that can't put that right.

I'd disagree with that, for me this is 100% on Nvidia, from rushing AIB's so thorough testing couldn't be done to passing off on the design EVGA sent them this is all on Nvidia.

JayZ 2cents (eurgh) just did a video, looks like the Evga card is blowing past its power limits by a good 20% or more sometimes even when not at 100% load. Eeeenteresting...
