    Finding old forum posts

Hi folks, hope you're all doing well

Does anyone know if it's possible to search for very old forum posts? I think the search tool and profile post listing is limited to 200 results, which only takes me back to around March 2008. Ideally I'd like to see everything I posted from July 2003 (i.e. The Beginning v2). I can see a couple of posts I made from that time by manually looking so I know they exist, it would just be handy to have a quicker way to find them.

I went down a rabbit hole of nostalgia yesterday and I'm trying to piece to gether my computer hardware history, and I've no doubt some of my early forum posts will help fill in some blanks.

    Thanks!

    Re: Finding old forum posts

I figured it out - you can search sections or individual forums and, for my sparse posting history at least, fall within the search results limit.

I found some interesting tidbits of information to help me, as well as a lot of dubious posts from some clown bearing my name. Hard to believe it was myself. As Taylor said recently - embrace the cringe! 🤦rubbish♂ï¸

Funnily enough I was having the same problem a little while ago. Trying to find a post regarding Windows 7 instructions and update a link I'd put on there.

    I'll try your method

This thread sent me down a rabbit hole of old threads, I apparently had hardware I don't even remember having!

Sometimes Google can be better than forum searching.

If you put "site:forums.hexus.net" in the search bar, then what you're looking for, you can often get good results. eg. "site:forums.hexus.net shad"

So many bits and pieces I'd forgotton about. So many things I wish I'd kept too, particularly seeing how hard those parts are to find now. Then I ended up looking through old archived files from that same time period. The early days of HEXUS, lots of ICQ logs, things I did at school, old emails, photos, etc. So much nostalgia

This was all brought on after seeing lots of nice content about retro PCs and retro gaming recently, so I fancy building something similar to what I had 'back in the day' when I was growing up.

I'm fairly certain my parents shed still houses the junk that was my 2000-2006 PC, athlon 750 oc'd, 128MB voodoo FX2, I upgraded the RAM near the end, from 128 to a lavish 512MB, the HDD dropped a platter or spindle or whatever the heck the loud bang was so that's gone, but otherwise it could still fire up its win98 glory

I have 2-3 XP machines and 2 win7 machines. Yeah, the loft is a graveyard, but it does mean I am well set for retro gaming wherever you want to pitch the bar, so if this is becoming a thing then count me in!

    Re: Finding old forum posts

That sounds like a real treasure trove of classic hardware. You'll have to see how much of it still works. I hear things like leaky capacitors on motherboards and in PSUs are the biggest risk for failure so watch out! The RAM is a funny one - last night I was reading up on the right sort of amount to run with Win98SE and there was lots of debate over 128 or 256, or even 512. Huge amounts for the time of course, but it seems to silly now to have so much potential difference in performance and stability over such tiny quantities of memory.

Anyhoo... after a little late night eBay browsing I now have an ASUS A7V133 motherboard on the way, and I managed to find an AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.3GHz with the AXIA stepping and 'Y' code, so I snapped that up as well. Hopefully I can still remember how to overclock those things! I'm still keeping an eye out for an ABIT KT7 and KR7A since those are the Socket 462 boards I had, but they're very hard to come by now unfortunately. And Socket 462 coolers too, they've all mostly disappeared.

I think that system and a good Super Socket 7 system will do me for now...
