    Kidneys

So, has anyone here only got one?

Turns out my old mans having dialysis 3 times a week now and is on the waiting list for a new kidney..

We've not spoken in 10+ years and tbh, I'm not bothered as I seem to have the ability to just cut people out of my life and it not affect me, there's probably a term for that, I dunno..

But anyway, it would more be for my mother who would be pretty lost without him, and it'd bring me some happiness knowing that I'd helped him, and that would annoy him greatly....

    Anyone?

Take time and find out all the information. You can live with just one but there are risks and potential downsides to consider. While you're more likely to be a match it is not guaranteed sfaik from various programmes. Also consider relative ages and stages of life and net benefit vs loss for all parties.

I'm not trying to sway you either way, just to encourage a rounded consideration. I've seen enough House to adopt his cynical attitude that we can be too prone to sentiment and not always level headed enough in major irreversible decisions until it's too late

Also kudos for the thread. I wondered if someone was trying to fund a GPU upgrade when I first saw the title.

tbh I have a 3080FE, I'm good for a GPU, that said, I do have a few debts, whats the going rate on one slightly miss-used kidney these days?

I hope you are able to make a 'balanced decision', wishing you and your family all the best.

Nothing pertinent to add sorry, just wondered how the thought process was going on this (if you don't mind the question).

    Re: Kidneys

Have had this bug that's been going round so been on my arse for the last 2 weeks, have had a chat with a few other people and have decided that kidneys are like backups, you don't need them until you need them, so unless my actual offspring need one, they'll be staying put...

    Re: Kidneys

Totally understandable, glad to hear you aren't having an ongoing hideous quandary. My thought at the time (as a pessimist) was that if there were problems on your side that's a truly awful situation for your mother, hope there's progress with the waiting list not too long hence.

I feel for your dilemma, but I'm happy to hear that decision. It's a very generous sacrifice by those that do it and yes, we can live pretty normal lives on one .... providing nothing goes wrong with it. Something did, with one of mine. It's a damn good thing I still had two. And for a family man, I'd say, albeit hesitantly given it was your Dad, that your wife and kids come first. It is a very big gamble on that. The odds of having trouble with the remaining one might be small, but the size of the issues you'd have if you draw that card, having given up the backup, are anything but trivial.
