Just picked up a cheap retro handheld (R36s) for £20 and it's amazing

Ali Express special, ok, so it came without the OS card it was meant to but they're rubbish quality anyway so I flashed a 256GB Samsung card and can now happily play Desert Strike, Cannon Fodder, Mario (and Goldeneye at a snails pace)

I know I could have installed similar stuff on the SteamDeck but this thing looks like a gameboy and I just drop my ROMs on and away I go, I'm really impressed!

Had to look that one up, looks funky if a recipe for RSI!

    This made me laugh:

    Sooo many pixels

£29 direct from https://r36s.co.uk/shop/ at the moment (not sure who would pay £100+) - definitely in impulse buy territory!

Yes RSI is absolutely a risk with the size of it

    As for the resolution...

Currently realising how bad I am at old games, Desert Strike is pretty unforgiving

Re: Just picked up a cheap retro handheld (R36s) for £20 and it's amazing

Ugh, so the 'shop' on their .co.uk site just sends you to aliexpress when you click buy. Clicking around the website it's a worse experience than Amazon and that's saying something.

Have you got a 'genuine' one? Reviews seem mixed.

Edit: maybe the .co.uk website is the fake...? Click through buys go to multiple different product listings from multiple sellers! It's weird. "TT Super Player", "Shop1103831171", "Factory Game Direct", "3C MOKER" - who would you buy from

Yeah Ali is a mess. There's no official shop but I read cutesliving are OK, you can see how many sales shops have had so best to go for one with lots of sales and reviews. I wouldn't recommend who I bought from even though I wouldn't have used the SD card anyway.

And not sure if mine is genuine, but not sure I know what that actually means as its already a clone

Re: Just picked up a cheap retro handheld (R36s) for £20 and it's amazing

I've ordered 'something'. It's possibly going to be a present for a friend but I don't want to give them something that doesn't work so will at the least pop in another SD card with an updated ArkOS. Fingers crossed.

I had a look on Hotukdeals to see if there were any other offers, almost got myself a new mini rucksack but you can only get one thing at the headline 'welcome' price. I guess people just get a new account each time to get things cheap?

Re: Just picked up a cheap retro handheld (R36s) for £20 and it's amazing

I've recently got into this, I started with the Anbernic RG35XX Plus and ended up giving that to my sister, I now have the Anbernic RG353M and I love it. It's amazingly handy to keep in the work van, quickly flick it on and find a random game, Puzzle Boy is my favourite at the moment.

I've been playing about with custom ROMs, which are so much better than the standard, I'm running the RG35XX Plus on Knulli and have my RG353M running on ArkOS, both are very pretty and offer some essential features like Save States and other things I've forgotten just now.

By the way, have you seen the Tiny Best Set: Go!, highly recommend it if you're wanting a pack of all the best games.

Not 100% sure but Wii and GC are too much for it I think, N64 is hit and miss, Goldeneye is a bit choppy, Destruction Derby was like a slideshow. I'm running Amiga/Megadrive/Gameboy/NES with no issues.

BUT there are ways to overclock and you can add heatsinks to stop the throttling if you do.

Re: Just picked up a cheap retro handheld (R36s) for £20 and it's amazing

I have ordered one, mostly for amiga and megadrive and potentially a little PS1. Not afraid of tweaking it.

Funny with people saying making sure you get the 'proper' one, you mean the proper clone of a clone.

Yeah it's funny, I think it's just because custom os builds don't like the non originals, I used the chaos image I found which removes the issue where you have to know what screen you have.

Oh and make sure to clone the SD card and save the image then write it back to a decent quality card as the ones they come with are apparently prone to dying.

A little bored I decided to check out this £102 that they claim it's reduced from.

The website was only setup in March, the first price you could buy it at was £65/£67 depending on colour - but suddenly that doesn't matter as they're all the same price - I've gone through what little is available on the archive and find no evidence it was ever £102 as they currently claim it's reduced from.

Sadly we live in a world where if it doesn't say it used to be a higher price we won't buy it even though it was likely never at that price in the first place.
Bricks & mortar retailers are bound by rules which don't allow them to do this, I think it's only 7 days or something. It wouldn't surprise me if etailers are supposed to adhere but impossible to police.

If you go on Temu & Ali Express is anything at 'Full price'

£100 is nonsense, I looked at these months ago and I seem to recall them sitting at £40/£50 on Ali
