Sorry, I should have made clear... I was referring to 140MB not being very useful as a data storage device. Also, there are different levels of compression available for mp3's but there's only one proprietary compression (license from Sony) for MDs...

your forgetting thou that minidisc was out way before cd-r became cheap - mindiscs have been about a quid a piece for many many years which is lots cheaper than other re-writable media (zips etc).

there are drives which allow you to use the md just like a floppy - however they never took on. i believe they used a slightly differernt type of disc - same size but different format or sommit

I agree... When I was doing my research, I came across a couple of data drives made by Sony and they were super-expensive!! I think Sony has such a strangle hold on MD technology licensing, they can pretty much do what ever they wanted to do... They priced it too high and so it never took off, especially when people don't need that much storage space. When people eventually find the need for large mobile storage, Sony took the eye off the ball and missed their chance.

A few months ago I was looking into getting an mp3 player but didn't want to pay over 150 quid for one.

A mate was desperate for money who sold me a MD NZ01 inc all cables etc for 50 quid. Far better quality than any mp3 player and you can copy mp3's straight to the unit via USB.

On LP2 recording mode thats 2 CD's per MD with minimal quality loss (I cant tell the difference). The best bit being that blank MD's are about 80p each from a local store, saves you deleting/uploading to your mp3 player.

Now any of my friends that are looking for an MP3 player I recommend a 'NET' Minidisc recorder.

(You can probably pick one up from about 80 quid from fleabay).

Thats my 50p's worth anyway - flame away

I wouldnt be without my minidisc, great for taking on holiday. The car has one as well, but i only need to use my portable unit to record discs not another box to go in the hifi stack. And the best thing is they are tuff, so doesent amtter where the wife throws them they still survive.

I loved the buffer/Antishock feature - Perfect for the car. CD bounces and skips, but I can drive down a pothole the size of birmingham and the minidisc plays on.

quality is similar to that of 128k mp3. i can hear loss compared to cd or 192k mp3. lp2 isnt much worse quality because of the better coding algorithm (atrac 4 is better per k than atrac3). but it is slightly worse. a real plus is the battery life. most newer players can do 100+ hours which mp3 players just cant handle

Eh - you're saying that mindisc (non LP) is about the same as 128k mp3?

My friend you've been smoking something heavy. My minidiscs recorded straight from CD sound MUCH better than mp3 recorded at 320k!

must be something wrong with your ripper then. i can easily hear the difference - maybe a bit better than 128 but not as good as 192.

Nowt wrong with my ripper. I use LAME and have used others. ATRAC definately was the finest compressed audio I've ever heard. Shame that it's unliklely to replace MP3.

I personally HATE i-pods. Way too expensive and WAAAAY too big. Panasonic got it right with the SV-SD80 - now that's a sweet machine.
