    OK...who knows what this is?

OK I need a replacement laptop PSU....mine costs 3 times as much as another that is wired differently so just need to swap 2 wires over.

It has one of these near the adapter that goes into the laptop. Is this some sort of junction thing that can be opened and the thing rewired easily?

Do I need a tool to do so?

I have seen these on USB cables before and wondered what purpose they serve.

    Cheers, Dave

It's just a choke, designed to help with electical interference, or in otherwords a magnet. Normally unclip somehow, not needed to function though.

Gah, shows that I have been up since 3, no it doesn't enable rewiring, it just clips around the cable.

It is different costs cos the other has to be imported from Germany. Both have same model number, just wired differently. The one I need is much rarer and not really available here. Both are rated at same Watts Amps and Volts just the +V and Ground pins are transposed.

    Cheap as chips, bud!

and yes, that looks like an interference reducing thingie, to give it its technical name...

My scanner came with two loose in the box, you just looped the wire around once then clipped the dongles over the loop.

Its a ferrite choke thingy.. either clip onto the cable, or slide through it.
Not going to stop it working, but they should help reduce noise from the psu - switching pu's make a lot of noise, and filtering it out by other methods takes space/better components/money etc.. - doesnt mean either psu is better than the other though.

Never really needed for anything else though.. just put there to frustrate you for example on DVI cables where it stops it fitting under the back cover for your tft..

What happened to your old psu? Maybe it can be fixed..?

As for psu prices.. a simple linear 19v/4A PSU can be made for little over £15-25...

It's the machine they use to make sure the round liquorice allsorts are the right diameter. The long piece of liquorice goes in on end and comes out the other ther right diameter. Then it gets chopped up to make the allsort.

Old PSU works but has knackered fan. It sounds like a Delta screamer when it works, overheats when it doesn't!

The PSU is unopenable without wrecking it to replace the fan.

    ....oh...and I need 7.9A!
