    Helvellyn

'Lo folks, had a last weekend away before term starts and did Helvellyn again, via Striding Edge one day and then via Swirral Edge the next. Great fun, and some stunning views to be had, especially on Sunday when at the top of Catstye Cam (see map) we could see as far as Snowdonia in one direction and across to Scotland in the other

Didn't take any pics myself, was a fairly minimalist (read: hardcore) weekend camping it out, so after tent, trangia, sleeping bag and food there's nmot much room left for anything other than the bare essentials! Google for 'striding edge' to see what it's all about.

For a scanned map of the area see http://users.ox.ac.uk/~kebl2000/files/pics/hel_all.jpg (1.8mb)

ps. discovered the best pub in the Country in Glenridding. Open hearth fire, good bitters and lovely and warm, for those freezing cumbrian nights

It is fantastic up there isn't it? There's a wonderful effect you get on Striding Edge when the weather's right.... the cold air rolls down off the top of the mountain and mixes with the warm air on the valley floor (on the other side of the edge from Red tarn). This has the effect of making the cloud that's formed roll up the side of Striding Edge like a backwards wave.. and it stops at the top, doesn't spill over down the other side.. absolutely beautiful thing to watch Brought back memories chap - thanks
