    certainly looks interesting,

    About Google Video
About Google Video | Google Video Help

Our mission is to organize the world's information, and that includes the thousands of programs that play on our TVs every day. Google Video enables you to search a growing archive of televised content – everything from sports to dinosaur documentaries to news shows.

Just type in your search term (for instance, ipod or Napa Valley) or do a more advanced search (for instance, title:nightline) and Google Video will search the closed captioning and text descriptions of all the videos in our archive for relevant results. Click on a video title on your results page and you can view still images from the video and, where a transcript is available, short snippets of transcript text.
Will be interesting to see exactly what becomes available on here...just news or will sitcoms etc also appear in teh future??

i think as product placement becomes more prominent, and traditional advertising takes a back seat, most tv companies will willingly put all their shows online - they would actually make money out of the advertisers if they can track teh downloads, and everyone would be happy

the problem is that google video is open source; and the restraints that prevent the videos from being downloaded and played by other players (ie the DRM) is soooo easy to break, simply involves commenting out an if statement in the code that checks what is playing it :S

so TV companies would be leaving themselves wide open to piracy with adverts removed etc etc..

In all seriousness, several TV networks are investing in Broadcast over IP. AFAIK, the BBC have been investing in a new open source video codec for them to broadcast in withuot having to pay fees to RealNetworks and so on.
