The writer Fred Freiberger was looking for a title for the next episode of Space 1999 and drove past a Luton road sign on his way to work. Thus the name of the new episode was "The Rules of Luton". Luton being an alien planet where plant life ruled supreme.

Thermometers work because the tube has such a small volume compared to the ball at the bottom. Mercury expands excatly the same as all other metals
