i think the f828 could be a little better, and its 2 years old now, released in 2003...and there's also the canon powershot Pro1 thats pretty good too but i'd wait a bit to see what else is around the corner.

Yea Canon A520. You'll have money to spare from your £200 and it's a great camera. Check out my Cymru thread for some sample photos if you like mate. Not the greatest pictures in the world, but there you go.

To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.
The Canon a520 is on the shortlist. Does it matter that the Canon's only 4mp with 4x optical zoom & the Kodak is 5mp with 10x optical zoom? That is, does it affect the picture quality noticeably?
Also I'm comparing to the Fiji Finepix S550, Minolta Dimage Z3 & Olympus Camedia C765.
oh the decisions
if the zoom range is greater you're more likely to lose quality...glass just isn't that good I'm afraid. that said digi-cams (not slrs) often have very good lenses because they are made for just that camera. sony use zeiss - one of the best in the world, panasonic use leica - again renouned for their fantasic quality. I don't know much about others but canon's L series on the slr's is widely regarded as the best in the world...they have L glass on the Powershot Pro 1.
the lens makes omore of an imacpt than the sensor tbh. read around and you'll see who makes the best lenses and then see what there is on offer...

The Olympus C765 / C770 (great deal on amazon.co.uk at the moment £179) is quite dated now, and I'm very surprised Olympus haven't released an updated version or one with image stabilisation... still a very good camera although lack of image stabilisation on long zooms means you're more likely to need to take a tripod with you (depending on the conditions).Originally Posted by 0iD
anyway, for 12x optical zoom the Sony H1, Canon S2 IS, and Panasonic Lumix series (FZ3, FZ4, FZ5) are meant to be the best at the moment.

As far as I'm concerned, next to all of Kodak's digital cameras are sub-par. With a great level of zoom on a £200 digital camera, you are going to lose quality, usually resulting in dull and distorted images. Normally you wouldn't factor digital zoom into consideration, but this is a shot taken with 8x digital zoom on a cannon A520:Originally Posted by 0iD

Can the Fuji F10 be found for £200? I know it sells for $300 in the US.
It stands out as it excels with in low light environment thanks to its good flash and support for high ISO (1600). I am sure most cameras at £200 would be capable for regular day to day shot so it is a nice feature.
yes I hear the fuji f10 is a very good camera, certainly worth looking into.

cheapest I saw was inmac.co.uk at about £220 inc postage. (that's about £6 cheaper than anywhere else at the moment) My brother has it - what doesn't seem to have been mentioned is that the shutter response (on fast mode) is REALLY fast I was surprised by how fast it is, probably better than anything I've seen in compact digicams (and I've seen a lot).Originally Posted by TooNice
ps - here's a picture of the moon i just took with the Panasonix FZ3 - even with 12x zoom the moon's still small and i stupidly forgot the camera was still on 2mp, instead of 3mp...
