    Prebuilt System...

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Would you ever buy a prebuilt system?

I am asking because I am likely to buy the following Fujitsu Siemes built system. I work for electrical retailer and we sale these systems.

    AMD Athlon 3500+ 64bit
    512Mb DDR (2 x 256)
    200GB SATA HDD
Asus Mobo (Unsure of socket configuration), 90% sure it's an NForce though!
ATI X300 128Mb Graphics Card (Unsure if AGP or PCI-E)

All the usuals such as o/b lan and sound, basic keyboard, mouse and speakers. Also Win XP Home and Works Suite. (I have office but no copy of XP so this would be needed)

I appreciate it may be worth upping the graphics card.

I did take the side off of the case for a peek inside and cannot remember the mobo model number. lol. Anyway, there was a fan on the northbridge.

This retails at £470 but I am able to get 10% off due to ex-display and then a further 20% (one off annual staff discount voucher) bringing it down to: £338

For that spec it seems a pretty damn good price. The CPU is almost £160 on its own!

    What do you guys think?

(O/C doesn't come into it as the system will be ran at stock speeds)

It sounds worth it to me like you say you can upgrade the graphx, if you can get a gig of ram in there too... then you could probably sell the grphx card and 512mb of ram seperately

I think companies are realising that people pay to get custom systems built because it's cheaper and they get better spec systems, Dell have offered some fantastic set ups, i like my custom built systems though...

with custom build, you can not compramise on quality.

for instance, if i've got the money, i just won't use a non supermicro motherboard, they are the dogs bollocks, with amazing customer service. I had an issue i was fairly sure was down to the linux distro i was using, i was able to speak to a supermicro person who more than just knew enough to awnser my question, and we were able to find hte problem so quickly... Its the fact they care.

Some systems you get pre-built are shoddy, some are great, ironically the un-customized ones tend to be better, as they've made 1,000 of them in a batch, and tested them well, found all bugs etc.

That's right, and they also know that not everybody is that technical minded and they will always have the average family that need a pc for work/homework or whatever, so really they are trying to cater for everyones needs, but for Mr average who doesn't mind a system in beige ( maybe black or blue ) then it's fine

Like i said before you can't beat a pc that has been built to your own technical specification

fujitsu are normally reliable (altho one at work has started playing up)

it shudn't lag too much in normal use, and looks pretty powerful, you would be pushed to build that for that price, save up after buying it for a better graphics card and you have yourself a deal, with a machine more than capable of playing games etc.

at least it doesnt have onboard graphics, so i wouldn't worry to much

    my opinion

    BUY IT

By the way, back OT - that pc for £338 isnt too bad I guess..selling the existing ram\gfx and upgrading would probably be a good idea though as some people have already said.

Fujitsu Siemens are 1 of the few companies out there who make reasonable prebuilt pcs at a fair price...including AMD-based systems

I dont have any issues with building a system. Have lost count of the number of systems I have built.

It's just, at the moment I have no system. So spec'd one up the other day and the price of a 3500+, 512mb ram (apparently fuji use infineon ram), 200gb hdd and a dvd writer came in at £290 plus delivery.

So considering an entire system is £50 more I dont think it's so bad.

If I have a bit of money left over after buying my TFT I'll get 1gb ram and a better graphics card.

Could always up the PSU, get a better case and motherboard and it would still work out cheaper than buying the bare components.

We usually sale the system @ £470.

    @ Tesla as i said

You have one less worry, and it isnt that bad a price.

Just Buy it, if it doesnt work properly you could still probably sell it on at slightly more.
