    We Are Gutted

Took Bud ( our cat ) to the Vet earlier as his neck glands were really swollen and it's made his face swell up, we thought maybe he'd got a bad tooth that had become infected, but the Vet said he's got Leukaemia he's been given antibiotics which he has to take for a week, if after a week there's been no change then the vet said to think about "other options" I'm gutted he's been in the family for 8 years

I feel so pathetic because i can't stop crying

    I'm sorry guys

That's always difficult. I had 3 cats (a Mum and two "kittens" that we had from when she was 11 months and the kittens were 5 weeks). We only have 1 of the "kittens" left now - he's 16 and a half! It is painful when they pass but they bring us great pleasure when they are around. Cherish the happy memories and I hope that things work out for the best?

    Gosh! 16 and a half! that's a good age for a cat

Thank you for you well wishes, we do have loads of happy memories of him, i know i should think, well he''s only a cat, but i do see him as much a part of the family as everyone else

My dog got upset before when he saw us force feeding bud his antibiotics, i think he thought we were hurting him, he loves that cat

We have to force a pill down our cats throat once a week for a blood disorder. He used to have it twice a week. We try and make up for it in between and he would have died very young without the medication. Cats are amazing pets, dont feel silly about being sad.

I'm a newcomer to the board, but I'm still sorry to hear this. Although not a cat person (something about me means they just sharpen their claws up in readiness when they see me coming), I can only really remember about a year when my family didn't have at least one dog as a family member.

Hope things turn out better than you're expecting, but always remember the good/funny things they do to

    <-- cat person.

Its a very sad time, I wish you well. We lost a cat a few years ago, and got a replacement kitten. The kitten has every single habit, good or bad - its like our old cat reincarnate.

I'm sorry to hear about your cat, but seeing as my monitor fell on my shin, I'm not in the most sympathetic of moods...

The end is nigh for Bud, but put it this way, it is better to celebrate a life than to morn a death...

Recently my ginger cat passed away at the age of 21. He started having problems with arthritis which required a type of pill (cat equiv of cod liver oil) which he hated having, but was so arthritic he couldn't not let us give it to him. As soon as the tablets started working he was able to claw us and stop taking tablets, he'd get worse and we could give him the tablets again. This lasted about 3 years until he was diagnosed with thyroid problems and was put on thyroid tablets (thyroid was probably due to the arthritis tablets, but this was a known risk) so he was balanced out on these. Shortly after he lost the ability to purr, but continued with his happy life for another 2 years. One morning he didn't get up properly and stood with his head in his basket (but the rest of him outside the basket) so we knew there was something wrong. He spent the rest of the morning on my lap not moving or reacting at all. After a call to the emergency vet we left him in on a drip (as we suspected dehydration) but he died during the night. The vet suspected he'd had a brain haemorage or similar hence his non-reactiveness. 21 was a good age for a cat and tbh he had an excellent quality of life - I feel sorry that he died in a vets and not at home, but had I not done anything I would have felt worse with a what if. Had he been deterorating in such a way that caused him unnecessary pain I would have put him down long ago.

He outlived all his brothers/sisters by around 14 years. Not bad going for a ginger tom!

The point being if he responds to the medication, keep him on it! If he's not, then you should feel good about being able to releave him of what I'm sure is distressing to him too (presuming its a male). Cats are very affectionate and take up a big part of our lives as I'm sure he does in yours...

Mind you I wanted to strangle our rescue cat who brought in a very large woodpigeon yesterday (still alive) which had very, very bad wounds which had liberally coated the entire kitchen and walls in blood... Unfortunately I had to releave the pigeon of its life which is something I hate doing.

Awww I'm sorry i bet you were devastated
i keep worrying about Budweezer being in pain, i really hope he just feels tired, i think the dog can sense something is wrong with him, Max is really gentle with him now, no play fighting and he keeps sniffing around Buds neck and it makes me wonder wether he can smell the Leukaemia ( dogs can smell cancers in humans why not other animals ? )

And thanx for the thoughts guys, tis appreciated
