how big is the bowl and more importantly how big are the fish?

You should aim to have 1" of goldfish to 1 gallon of water minimum. Goldfish are very messy, they will get stressed in poor quality water and damage themselves!

Have you got any ornaments in the tank with them, if you have they could be catching themselves on that.

Thing is though, those little fish wont stay little very long.

Goldfish are Carp basically, the huge Goldfish you see in ponds start out at that size. Granted if you have a smaller tank the fish wont get as big as they normally would due to the tank size, however they will grow in bursts (nothing at all for a few month then they will suddenly appear bigger overnight).

Personally I would take that ornament out due to the tank being really small, its not fair on the fish at all (think of it this way, would you like to live in a 4x4 Ft room with a four poster bed in the middle of it ! ) Its also breaking the top of the water so will gather dust and inevitably dust will fall in the tank and no filtration to clear it and cause harmful bacteria.

If they have lost scales you can get a tonic from a local petstore that will help them recover, keep an eye on them though when you put it in as when you put stuff like that in a coldwater non filtered aquarium it could end up doing more harm than good, make sure you use the right amount for amount of water thats in there. They will recover themselves naturally, my fish sometimes get raggy fins from fighting (Gotta love Cichlids and their teritories ! ) but about a week later they have fully regrown the fins (provided its only small bites and tears understandably)

Another thing I would think on doing is get them a bigger tank, you can pick up a glass tank with basic hood that is approx 1 Ft wide with around 8" depth and height for around £15, also get some proper gravel in there. What you have on the bottom there is just for decoration, normally just dot a few around on the base of the aquarium so they look nice when lights hit them. Think you can still get the oxygen blocks also (white blocks with slow release of oxygen) Oxygen breaks down the harmful trait amonia has towards fish (fish poop is amonia basically) once its broke down its not harmful anymore to them. Just have a look about and see what you can find, I know you can still get the white feeder blocks for when you are away so dont get the 2 mixed up !

Mine have 2 spikes on their noses, little bits that stick up. Guess it comes with the teritory of the type of fish they are so they can smell blood in the water. My Convicts are HUGE (My biggest male is around 6 yr old now), you can see them on my Green Terror which is nearly 2 inch in size but nowhere near as dominant.

I've just bought my youngest sister two tiny fantails, cute little buggers, full of energy.
