    Napster

    i was talking to someone about converting the files so that you dont have to pay to burn them, and apparently there is a plugin for winamp that records the song as its playing and copies the ID3 tags, but you have to have no other sound on the computer... is this the easiest way of doing so to make a file of the music without having to buy the song?

    does anyone know what the plugin would be?

    or does anyone have an easier way?

    Cheers

    it would be illegal if i didnt already have the songs fully paid for: well, i say me, its my dad that needs to know, he has the songs on vinyl but wants them on cd without having to buy them again, thus it would be known as a backup rather than straight out stealing the material.

    It is still illegal dude iirc anyway, not sure what the legal standpoint is on "backups" anymore really.

    iirc you are allowed to make backups.
    http://copyrightservice.co.uk/copyri..._copyright_law
    i only scan read this so iam sorry if its wrong.

    # Acts that are allowed

    Fair dealing is a term used to describe acts which are permitted to a certain degree without infringing the work, these acts are:

    * Private and research study purposes.
    * Performance, copies or lending for educational purposes.
    * Criticism and news reporting.
    * Incidental inclusion.
    * Copies and lending by librarians.
    * Acts for the purposes of royal commissions, statutory enquiries, judicial proceedings and parliamentary purposes.
    * Recording of broadcasts for the purposes of listening to or viewing at a more convenient time, this is known as time shifting.
    * Producing a back up copy for personal use of a computer program.
    * Playing sound recording for a non profit making organisation, club or society.

    (Profit making organisations and individuals should obtain a license from the Performing Rights Society.)

    yeah ok so you can make a backup - but downloading it off the net isnt making a backup.

    Making a backup would involve you plugging in the record player to the PC and making your own MP3s..that can be done without much trouble..

    At the very least it will be breaking the napster TOS, even if by some miracle its not breaking the law
