Things I've forgotten from when I was a kid

I've been thinking about a couple of things I read/saw when I was a kid, that I'm wondering if anyone else remembers. One was a series of books about a group of kids who traveled in a spaceship constructed from a hollowed out asteroid. They were separated from their parents for some reason, but did once meet up with them. In one story, they trained their cat to operate the ship's weapons systems by dangling balls around its cradle and getting it to swipe at them.

The second thing was an animated series, which brings to mind Jamie and His Magic Torch, in which children were snatched during the night by a light/portal which appeared under their beds. It was managed by some sort of devil character.

Just remembered another, a society that lives in an underground city seen from the point of view of one, eventually two, kids. As the story develops, they make their way up through the levels of the city, eventually finding the priviledged surface levels and ultimately the outside, where they learn that the city is supplied somehow from the outside world.

Does anyone know what these things were? Also, perhaps you'd like to share your own memories that the reat of us could explain.

I found a copy of The Magic Faraway Tree the other day, ended up reading it all the way through, in tears for the most part

The one about the kids being snatched by the portal under their beds sounds like an episode of the all time classic cartoon series Dungeons & Dragons....man, how I wanted an energy bow like that tall kid....

Ah yes, the 'some sort of devil' character would've been the dude with just the one horn on his head. Venger or something.

Any ideas on the underground city? That's really bugging me. [edit] Found it! It's called "This Time of Darkness"

I remember jamie and his magic torch. Anyone remember Wizbit which had Paul Daniels in it? Ha ha thisaway ha ha thataway ...

I used to love the old classic cartoons such as Transformers and Thundercats. Used to read The Beano comic as well. Don't like the new style drawing ones though.

a big pinky yellowy polystyrene cone, with a silly expression on its face, whats not to like?

    anyone remember terrahawks? ulysses 31?
and there was this cartoon i remember - before those aweful power rangers - about a group of people who flew/drove these planes or spaceships and they all slotted together to make one big one. I think it was a japanese cartoon originally...
and yes, eighties nostalgia. thundercats, transformers, he-man (and his slightly overly camp enemy skeletor...)...now why don't they make things like them any more?

They dont make these fine cartoon, cos kids now are dumb and watch stoopid things like tweenies etc and hang round in street corners, with their tracky suits on, just like mum/dad.

Things i've forgotten to do since a child is waking up at 7am on Sats, just to watch back to back cartoon all morning and having McCain Microwave Chips for breaky, whilst everyone else was sleeping.

Now, on Sat, i skip breakfast&lunch and wake up at 2pm, in time for late lunch.
