    How much did it cost?
and is it actually certified to be fire proof?
Just another question - with surge protectors you can get ones that protect you up to a certain amount of money if they dont work, is this the case with these safes ?

What would happen if fire ripped through my home? My neighbouring flat owners would not be happy with me!

But for the cheapest ones, not exaclty cheap though! You are looking at 1hours protection in a house fire. Also depending on the extent of the damage to the building who is going to go and retrieve it from a building that needs pulling? Not me
Exactly, those safes aren't going to protect a DVD if your place goes up in smoke unless the fire is put out quickly. Even paper chars inside them if the safe is hot too long.

I am extremely paranoid about this (partly down to our very dodgy electrics). I back up all the computers in the house about once a month I keep the external HDD in my room - parents know where it is (doubt they would take it though) but if there was a fire it'd be the first priority to grab - then rest of family! I'd try to take my notebook aswell. Of course if I had time I start throwing stuff out the window - but in reality, I doubt I'd be thinking about that or have real time... smoke, heat, collapse, flames spreading to block my pathway when re-entering. It's this same reasons that I transferred about 90% of my paper documents to the computer. All the possesions, well of course I wouldn't want them gone, but house insurance should do that.

We have two large outdoor brick sheds, I'd like to see one of them done up to a wam dry office space, then have an old comp. running as a server for backups (and my media files).

I'd also like to see fire extinguishers in each of the rooms of our house... but that isn't going to happen. What really concerns me is when no-one is at home and my backups are destroyed + my lappy.

Indeedy Pyle, insurers are picky about which safes they approve.

With you training as a fireman I hope you'd rescue the people - or do you look at them as the same as the safe!

One of the cats didnt like me for ages after though as it was cowering in corner of room and when I picked it up it was going wild so I put it out a 1st story window into the bushes below.
Was that what inspired you to do your current job?

Think about it this way, your powerbook was a one off fee, your girlfriend is gonna keep costing you more and more. Also, your powerbook is lighter (I hope) than your girlfriend, so in the event of a fire, you've got less chance of stumbling, falling down the stairs and what have you with your powerbook if your arms, rather than trying to give your girlfriend a firemans lift.

I think it was certified for around 30mins I cant remember offhand. I wouldnt be surprised if it melted knowing b&q hehe. It was around £30 from memory

Edit: Ah found the one http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/produc...e&PRODID=19160

    i use, parents, grandparents system.

because one set live in cornwall, another in devon, then one in yorkshire, its quite good diserpation. Its a low cost of ownershop (i left a 800mhz cellry at my parents, and post DVDs to grand parents).

    Works well

Yea I would leave data at a good mates place, I know I could trust a few of my friends 100% aswell, as well as family. Maybe you could send a DVD to them every 6 months or something.
