Help Mrs F become a Midwife...

Right it’s took me well over a year to decide this and Iv changed my mind sooo many times but I finally know what I want to do with my life…but I have a feeling that’s its not going to go to plan…. im 18(19 in one month yay) went to the wrong high school and did horrid in my GCSE’S, I moved in with Fraggie so have to now pay council tax and rent 

Now what I want to do is go back to school and re-do my GCSE’S put my head down this time and get the grades I could have got the first time around, I also want to a access course in Nursing and Healthcare but to do all this it’ll prob need to be done full time so I was wondering if any of you hexus folks would know if I could perhaps apply for a student loan or what grants I could get? Because doing this full time I wont be working so no money for rent and tax and so on….

    Thanks

I know a few people at my college who are in there later teens get Audult Leaning Grants: theres some info http://www.learndirect-advice.co.uk/featured/alg/ < there.

I also think if your in full time education then you can get more money, like houseing benifits and the like. But i'm not sure on that one. You really need to seek some advice from someone in the profesianal no about this thing, prehaps you could contact your previous school and they could put you in touch.

Tho. if any one knows any other orgaiasations that offer advice then..

If youre applying for the midwife course you may be able to get nhs bursaries although probably not if your gcses are a bit poo. You may be able to get ema while studying but i dont know if that applies to 'mature' students. and its only 30 quid a week.

What english matsh science gcses did you get? theyre the only ones worth bothering with imo.

The entry requirements http://www.nhscareers.nhs.uk/careers...ife_route.html state 5 gcses a-c which you can probably do in 6 months to a year to be honest. then once youre on the diploma the bursary is around 6k i think (gfs sister is doing one) but its income assessed and you can apply for a student loan at the same time

Edit: and whatever you decide good luck

Look around at what local charities are in your area as well. One of the jobs I did was working for a charity that as well as doing 'relief in need' (ie helping out those on the poverty level or below with basic items for living) was to give grants to students in full time education, so long as they qualified (at the time that was being over 16, in full time education (had been part time as well, but there soon too many applicants for the funds available if part time was included too), and they had to live within a certain area.

You may find some local charities in your area who do a similar thing.

best bet is to talk to an advisor at your local college about resitting gcse's I know when I was there you could apply for an access fund I think it was called, you got so much cash a term to help towards travel expenses/rent/equipment and books, they'll be able to help you out and advise you with what route is best to take.

A student loan should still be available (once you're doing your uni course anyway)...get in contact with your LEA. It's means tested, so living independently may get you a decent one. An NHS bursary probably wont apply, or at least maybe not at first (or is midwifery a single year thingy, can't remember, will try & find out more later). Also, council tax wont apply, since if you're a full time student you don't pay it, and since you'll be living with another student neither of you will, just need certificates from your education establishment. Sorry if thats no use, i'll go & ask at my uni & see what kind of info on that kind of stuff they can give me.

Lots of university courses have an 'access course' or 'foundation course' or similar- which means that if you don't have the formal qualifications to get on the main course you can do a year long course to make sure that you've got the basic skills to carry on through the full course. As far as I know (from talking to a couple of student nurses at uni) nursing is a full three year course like any other, albeit a very specialised one. I see no reason why midwifery would be any different. So- if you don't have the quals to go striaght onto a nursing course, see if there's an access course you could do. I'd say it's less risky than retaking all your GCSE etc.- if you pass the access course then you're straight into the main degree with no hassle. An childhood friend of mine (who I hadn't really stayed in touch with) joined my engineering course a year behind me having done the foundation course- I think she finished it too, whereas I flunked out.

Good luck- I must say that the program they had on the BBC about midwives recently was very moving viewing even if I'm not sure whether I'll have any kids myself

talk to your local citizens advice people.

There are lots of deals that are local specific, lots of inititives been pioloted all the time. Objective 1 is only in some areas, and that is like a blank cheque for stuff that might in some way help re-juvinate the area.

i'd decided this time last year to do midwifery. It looked really good, but it meant doing another 3/4 years on top of the 3/4 year degree i'm doing now. I was fine with this though, but it meant i'd need to find SOME sort of healthcare work experience, which is quite difficult when u're doing a full time degree that's 9-5 mon to fri, and you havent been involved in healthcare before. However I think doing the access course in healthcare would be really advantageous to you.

As for GCSEs, i think you could manage to do them part time, they arent as difficult as you thought when you were 16, and since you've learned a lot since then you will more than likely find them reall really easy, after all, they are more or less just common sense (depending on the subject, obviously!)

As for funding, you should get some sort of grant for redoing your GCSEs, maybe get in touch with learn direct? Your uni course will be funded by the NHS and you'll get a nice £6k bursary.

Mr Fraggie's income shouldnt come into it as you arent actually married, therefore as far as they're concerned you're just sharing a flat/house.
