That depends on what her health problems are. Some damage, like lung damage and cancer has probably already been caused, but if the health problems are respiratory-related, for instance, it's eminently possible that stopping now will be a great help, and that not stopping now could be dangerous, or deadly.

Ditto heart attack problems. Smoke causes problems with the platelets in the blood and with the arteries of the heart, and there is even some medical evidence to suggest that inhaling second-hand smoke significantly increases the risk of heart attack.
