I've known about this since we did the experiment in science so many years ago, even though I always put the leftovers in a container, I thought this only applied to the tins that don't have the ring pull, as the top of the thin is slightly perforated to an extent...
I never do it On the rare occasions that i have tinned food left over (doesnt normally happen, beans on toast? just use more toast for those extra beans ) it goes in a tuppaware (or similar) and then into the fridge.
Some of my friends at uni did it though, one in particular would always leave half a tin of beans covered wtih clingfilm in the fridge. Never understood that as surely they won't taste as good when he uses them again...but heh we're students so what do you expect
I'm fairly sure that all modern tins are safe now though anyway, although obviously i still wipe down the top of the tin before opening

And remember kids, don't forget to place any bananas you buy flat, in a container with enough lenght to contain them without leaving them sticking over the edge or with the pointy ends pointing upwards. A passing child or elderly person could slip on an unseen banana skin thrown down earlier, fall on the pointy banana end and ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... DIE!
Also, when making toast in a pop-up toaster, remember to wear a pair of swimming goggles and retire to a minimum safe distance of 37 feet. The toast, when ready, could pop out of the toaster, fly through the air and hit you in your unprotected eyes, and you could... ... ... ... ... ... ... DIE!
If your kitchen is not 37 feet long, I suggest a simple CCTV system which you could set up in another room, or perhaps at the bottom of the garden, allowing you to view your toast without getting within the potential hazzard area. When you purchase your CCTV unit, why not consider a 2nd camera to monitor your banana storage facility? That way, you can be sure that while you are at the bottom of the garden waiting for your toast, a young child or elderly relative doesn't fall prey to a stray pointy banana end and... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... DIE!
If you don't, people could... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... DIE!
Does this mean I shouldn't leave my unopened cans of uranium in the fridge?
No, because the Americans namely the Bush administration might think you are developing nuclear weaponsOriginally Posted by Mike Fishcake

Libyans?
Nope, I'm a gemini.
They should do a nice job of irradiating the rest of the food - making it safer as whatever organisms it was exposed to oout of the fridge won't last longOriginally Posted by Mike Fishcake
I assume you mean U-235 or U-233 as you could wear pants made of U-238 and neither you nor your potential kids would be at risk

LOL A little OTT but I agree with the point entirely.Originally Posted by Stewart
Leaving stuff in the tin in the fridge is and always has been harmless. Provided you eat it within a reasonable time limit.
You are more likely to die as a result of a freak frozen aviation related sewage incident than as a result of not putting your food in another container before putting it in the fridge.
