Unbelievable guys. Serisously, Deckards and Baz's stories are shocking no wonder pc world and dixons are doing so well
Someone i work with has just been sold a £1000 tiny package "its got the lot digi cam scanner etc" and all she want it for is so her kids can do there homework- word proc and net surfing /sigh
The other day i was working and a customer came into the shop and asked me where the laptop magazines were. I showed him and he then starts asking my advice on laptops. He was an older guys poor chap had been completely bull shi**ed by dixons who told him and i quote "you need a centrino laptop mate, the centriono is a processor and the fastest one available for laptops" He had also been advised by someone to get himslef a 3g phone to connect to the internet with via his laptop. He was planning on using this at home and when he went away on business trips. To him that £30 a month contract sounded really cheap and so he was spellbound when i told him he could get unlimited net access for about £15 a month. Bah dixons and pc world. Hed also been told that he could connect to th internet wirelesly using infra-red...
Im lucky my mum doesnt use computers, doesnt like them stays well away. My sister surfs the net and does hw and calls me when there is the slightest problem so il fix it for her (usually blueyonder down ) My dad is actually very computer literate so judging by what others have said i get off light
just as well that guy didnt use a 3g phone to connect to the web - they wont access any services outside the "3" network
I have one as a work phone and its pants

Blimey sounds like i'm really lucky.
I'm also the only one in the family with any real computer knowledge. My brother knows absolutely nothing se he doesnt get in the way.
I think i was lucky. I bought my Mum her first computer, showed her how to use it, fixed any problems, upgraded it etc. So i have always been the 'computer person' with no-one else trying to give their opinion. She doesn't know anything about hardware but is cynical enough to not believe the PC World adverts.
On a side note the recent pc world adverts ammused me. So they have qualified people working there eh? so why do their recruitment adverts state that no experience is needed?
With home users that is acceptable, what about the SYSAdmin I was supporting one day who asked what a ping was on being asked if he could ping a server, I was amazed although he did have a netbeui network I would have at least expected some tcpip knowledge. set up a windows network for him anyway and that was that, but it was a shock.

My rents are just starting to use the PC I built them, mainly for web surfing and stuff, fortunately I am in the fortunate position of having 100% trust, (mainly because there hasn't been a problem I couldn't fix).
Feel sorry for you guys with the nightmare mums
I have the same problem - I have not one but two brothers. I'm in the middle...sometimes its a good thing, sometimes not.
anyway - the youngest is very clever (he did A-levels instead of GCSE's...yeah, and he's starting to become a bit arrogant so we put him down a little to shut him up...) - and my older bro has a degree and is actually DOING a computer course at the moment (sure he knows 'nothing') and I'v got an MSc (sure, I'v never used high-powered technical equipment before...) the sad thing is when myself and older bro KNOW he (younger bro) doesn't know about something - but my parents recon he does - so when ever there's something they want to know about computers they ask him.
and its so blatent that he isn't sure about what he's talking about but my rentals take him at his word...
and its funny cause when my mum is having problems on her computer I'm always the one to fix it.
...frustrating too when even in normal conversations or any type of advice they always listen to the little squirt and never myself or older bro...and we've got no life experience what so ever, no, none at all, thats right, nothing, zip, zero... (i'm being sarcastic)

It was at this part I finally collapsed with laughter.....
Deck, I can only hope your sister never asks you to look at her PC......
my family are all technical retards! dad uses the computer for porn (he thinks i don't know yet...haha, fool) and playin cards on here. my bro uses it for music, chat and givin it viruses, as he's an idiot. mom uses it for emails and some school-work (she's a teacher), but makes me do a lot of it for her and yells at me to slow down so she can write down what i'm doing (normally making a table or spreadsheet for her....). they all know they'd die if they came near my laptop, so they leave that alone and just yell if they need me to sort out this machine for them.

LOL, I have been in that situation before!!! Porn Dialers left in the Recycle Bin, and recently-viewed images listed in the documents toolbar!!! And they don't think we notice, bleh
I lay down a simmilar rule to Theo's in my house, "if you think its broken just don't touch it again until i say so, and if you do you may just loose your network connection"
Usual maintains some degree of sanity.
