Morgan Spurlock (Supersize Me) has a book called 'Don't Eat This Book' that goes into some deapth regarding the food pyramid and food education in the US, it's not surprising that guy has no idea about food. In some schools they use a large franchise burger with all the trimmings to represent all the food groups.

Not sure if this is still the case, but certainly as recently as five or so years ago, many schools are "sponsored" by big name chains (Mcdonalds...)

If you do well in class, you get a Mcd's meal voucher.
