Call me picky / strange, but most servers have 'friendly' names, for example 34sp have deepthought etc. Due to me having no imagination at all, is there some kind of server name generator on a website somewhere?
Thanks

nope - why not use a dictionary.
Personally I only use friendly names for personal servers. I tend to give servers I built for work a more structured name that lets me know what the server is and what it does ( apart from our ones in the office who are named after simpsons characters )

I have a tag on stuff I use, quite harmless but nice...you know, when programs ask for 'company' entries on install...
as far as servers and things I think, especially office scenario, the names of famous characters works best. for internet servers the sort of name you want - like deepthought - should, in my opinion, be something people will remember and that also stands out a little...

I use greek/roman mythology - works quite well, but new servers named castor (e-mail) and pollux (file and print) are known as caster and pollock by staff - leading to much confusion when talking people through setting up their accounts.
amusingly one of our clients was using the same naming convention, and wondered why his shortcuts (from my office) were pointing towards one of his servers when he accessed it over the wan!
In my dad's office they have a different cartoon for each floor eg:
First floor: Barney, Rubble, Wilma, and Dino
Second Floor: Bart, Homer, Marge etc...
Seems to work quite well, because you also know physically where they are as well.

Pick a theme, if possible base it on something in your life and name all the servers you ever work on within that theme.
For example all the servers i've named have anime realted names

I used to use Thunderbird1, Thunderbird2 etc..... But now use an Alcoholic beverages theme. Vodka, Stella, Redbull, etc..........

Dude, every geek in the world spends HOURS AND HOURS thinking up names for their servers, even if they dont have any!

lol, ive decided to call all our servers hydrogen, helium, lithium etc so u can tell which server number it is if your any good at chemistry
also works well cos the company name is based on the idea of cold fusion, and they are easy to remember subdomains, hydrogen.neo-fusion.co.uk ---> server1 etc
since when was redbull an alcoholic beverage?Originally posted by XTR

I use the southpark characters at the moment
Harry Potter theme here (Cos the server I inherited was an HP Netserver)
So there's Harry the server, the client PC's Ron and Dobby,
and the laptops Hermione and Myrtle (Myrtle's the one that always gives me grief!)
Since this seems to have turned into a geeky "my servers named" thread... i'll join in
Servers i've named:
Macross - My fileserver
Jubei - My print server, cdr burning machine and nifty "Ohhhh, i've got an rs/6000" machine
Isamu - Backup server for the student network at work.
Geofront - By dual p3 in co-location
Epion - My smoothwall box
And the few that dont fit into my theme!
Fault - A fault logging machine i created at work
Bitch - My mail server
Fiddlebox - My mp3 player type machine
Studentmail - Have a guess what it's destined to do
An now, for non servers
Bonaparte - this laptop
Megalord - My main pc, nice dual 1.8
Beast - My a4000
As you can see, the more pc's you have the easier names make things (trust me on this ok )
