- WHAT IS WRONG WITH BEING GINGER???? I actually missed the Catharine Tate show with the ginger comments in it. *sigh*

- Did you know that in medieval London and parts of England we had a large black population that suddenly disappeared within approx 200 years (i.e. by 1600's). Do you know what happened to them? They settled, got married and had kids. Historians reckon that something like 60% of Londoners who can trace their families back that far have black ancestors. We truely are a mongrel nation

Yes. I worked from April '03 until October '05 for Ofsted. I can safely say that I never came across any 'PC gone mad' nonsense while I was there. On my floor there were several Muslims of Pakistani/Bangladeshi origin....and also a couple of Hindus who were great friends with them.

There were quite a few black Christians who, in the discussions that I overheard, were pretty pious as regards their own faith, but who would never have dreamed of trying to spread the gospel to anyone else in the office. Mainly they were African immigrants, but equally my first supervisor was a (just) second generation Carribean woman who was as Christian as any of them as far as I could tell.

Anyway- the point is- I worked in as multicultural an office as anyone could wish to work in- and our holidays were still very clearly based around the Christian calendar. There was never the slightest management direction that Christmas was something we should not be celebrating.

I know of a school in leeds, because a friend of the family used to send their kids there that didn't have xmas decorations up, not even a tree!

It wasn't banned, just not been celebrated, the PTA complained and the ringleader was told they needed to be more tolerant. Ironic as the ring leader is a 2nd generation polish immergrant.

but alot of things recently are very silly, such as.. trying to ban christmas because other cultures in england dont beleive in Jesus??? not being allowed to have St. Georges flag on a town sign as it isnt "multi-ethnic". Do we try and ban Diwali(sp?) we do need to stand up for these things imho. i have a freind who has a white mom, and a black father, if you ask him if hes white or black, he'll say "half cast", but that isnt the correct term any more, nor is "mixed race", its "dual-heritage" crazy :|

I just ask that people don't fly the cheap and nasty St Georges flag and assume it's some kind of patriotism. A lot of people that do it have bog all interest in the country, they're just being 'proud to live in it' for no apparent reason.

I've always found it amusing that on the whole those who are "proud to be British" seem to be doing so little to make anyone proud of it in the first place.

Proud to spend all day in the pub? Proud to scream at each other in the street? Proud to have seven kids and a staffordshire terrier? etc. etc.

And you forgot to mention the 'lovable behaviour' of a Brit abroad, traits which so endear us to the countries we visit, and then excuse the loudness/rudeness/crudeness/pukiness because it's ok, we're ok we're on holiday!

He says he loves his country and by criticising it, he's aiming to help it improve. Probably the most patriotic thing he can do.

Although the BNP arnt particularily good, and this is a bit ironic coming from them, but I think they do sort of have a point.

In corrie they said 'white trash', which isnt the most racist comment you could come up with, but if you conversely said 'black [insert name for rubbish] trash/rubbish/****/etc]' then the black community would stand up and moan and then OFwhateverthedepartment is would have words with the corrie boss.

If someone shouted something racist about the blacks in corrie we wouldnt hear the end of it for a couple of weeks tho, Im happy to ignore it I dont care if people say stuff like that on TV, its meant to echo real life (Even though it doesnt very well at all ) so its to be accepted, but others dont see it that way.
