    A for Alpha, Z for Zebra?

    Actually, I have totally no idea how it goes. Is there a list of "standard" words that represent each letter in the alphabet? I was on the phone just now and at one point I had to spell my postcode. The lady asked me to give an example when I said "S", and the first word that came to mind was "Sex" [sheer coincidence], which I presume is -not- the "right" word

    sadly I've known these since I was 14 years old and had them etched into my mind doing the radio signals course while I was in the Army Cadet forces.

    Thing is I use it all on a daily basis as well now

    I used to laugh a lot at this when I worked in a call centre.

    Customers would recite their postcode with some hilarious examples, like "H for... Hello there!" Sometimes they'd take so long that I'd come up with a suggestion for them instead.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    Well say your postcode was sd3 6nm- plenty of opportunity for mistakes there. However if you say it over the phone as 'sierra delta three six november mike' there's far less chance of a mistake. If the person on the other end of the line doesn't know them though they can still get it wrong, happened to me a couple of times.

    this is actually the nato phonetic standard.

    An impressive number of people couldn't get my old postcode RG1 5QG "romeo golf one, five qubec golf". Moral of the story, too many idoits on the other end of phones.

    Often people say Nine, as Niner.

    If you've ever watched band of brothers you'll notice how its all about easy company. The US in them days used to use Easy for E.

    Yup and they are often referred too as E-Company in the series ( good stuff! got the SE box set, just finished watching it...... again )

    Phonetics is useful when i'm trying to give my address over the phone as no-one has ever heard of Gobowen or Oswestry

    QFT ! I hate talking on the phone, but especially some support lines - Apple are pretty bad at this - where the other end is soo quiet if theres even the slightest sound that you cant hear the person talking. Trying to give the dear blokes in India my post code was a bit of a laugh

    (except the moral of this story is that I am the muppet - as I should probably have used this
