Sorting a CD collection (or not)

I've got about 150 cd's. They are normally 'stored' either stacked on my speakers or on the floor. Unfortunately when the stack topples some cd cases break so I've finally purchased a case to fit them all into.

Question how do you sort your CD's: by artist or just throw them all in (or some new Labour 3rd way)?

(I liked the stacking method as the least recently played cd was at the bottom)

EDIT: corrected a bit of grammar

well, all my cd's are ripped onto my pc, so most of them just go into a cupboard in cronological order (rather the order I bought them in anyway). Probably the best way is to do it alphabetically by artist the album name, though this could be a problem when adding extras in half way through the alphabet

Just throw them back in as i listen to them. So its completely random. But at the moment i'm currently ripping all my CD's to FLAC/MP3/AAC so i never need the CD's again, so when i've finally finished they will be put into order by artist and stored.

all my music is ripped to my computer, that failing however, i have four stacks, most commonly listened to and most recently purchased at the top. 1 pile is only annoying, none standard cases that tend to make the piles lean.

I did, in the past, back when i had a "managable" number of CD's sort them alphabetically, but that rapidly changed

Mine are in alphabetical order by artist.... does that make me strange?!! I'd never manage to find what I was looking for otherwise and that would drive me nuts!

I've had a lot of sobering thoughts in my time.... It was them that started me drinking.

I don't have too many CDs at the moment, maybe 40 but they're sorted by genre. So depending on what i feel like i go to that genre and pick something out.

Thats for the stereo, pc its all ripped with EAC+FLAC and sorted by artist name

I only have less than 20 CDs, but I thought it's best to have a system now, so it's still organised when I have 50. Got everything ordered by artist then album in alphabetical order. It may sound sad, but at least I know where everything is then. I wouldn't just stack them either. You'd need a device so that when you take out a middle on, then the top ones don't fall over. My device is called a 'desk'. I have them all lined up with a bookend to keep them up.

Even though I rarley touch the CDs themselves, I don't like the idea of just downloading tracks. I'd still rather have something physical to keep.

Mine are in chronological order (for music) so I can easily get access to the newer music.

All my drivers disc though are just thrown into a shoebox.... (only time I need them is when I re-format and I'll need them all.)
    Woohoo now Assistant Manager!
