    Cheap music sites? (Legal)

Could any recommend me a cheap site to download mp3 albums? I want a few albums but don't wish to pay for the case and stuff (£10)

www.allofmp3.com is good. Cheap, and lets you choose from a variety of file formats. They even have lossless files.

Aye, but they're pretty full of DRM apparently.

allofmp3 is *not* legal, despite the chain of arguments its many users string together.

the only places you're likely to get DRM-free online music is bleep, magnatune, small places like that - with a handful of big names between them

It's not fully legal but safe to use according to Computer active magazine-

The site is indeed legal - but only within Russia. UK consumers will not face legal action for buying tracks from the site, however, it may soon face the same kind of legal action from record labels as CDWow.com did earlier this year.

computer active don't have a brain cell to share between them, so i wouldn't take what they say to mean anything.

allofmp3 don't break any russian piracy laws, per se - as all russian laws on copyright infringement relate only to physical goods. in that sense, you could have a russian website with full downloadable copies of windows - and within russia only, it would be just as legal as allofmp3. the legal case against allofmp3 by the IFPI fell through due to this - since they don't sell CDs on street corners, russian law says they've committed no crime

they're often quoted as paying licensing fees to ROMS, a russian entity that's meant to handle the distribution of wealth. and they do, to all the people they cover - i.e. radio performances of classical music & opera. ROMS stopped paying anyone for modern music about 3 years ago. the artists see just as much reimbursement from allofmp3 purchases as torrentspy downloads.

in addition, allofmp3 is only quasi-legal in russia, NOT from the UK - the berne convention on copyright precludes going to foreign lands & violating laws there, just as you can't travel to foreign lands & partake in sexual acts which are illegal here either.

so no, sorry computer active, but the UK's second most used download service is NOT legal.

    BlueRiband, what albums are they?

have you looked at second used copies from Amazon New&Used or eBay? I've started buying quite a lot of music through both of them. I't not just a price thing either, i'm finding a lot of music i just can't get anywhere else.

The usage of allofmp3.com's service comes down to a question of ethics as well - the artists see none of the money.

Wow, I didn't know all this about allofmp3. It kind of defeats the object of paying for music if the artists don't see any of it :x. I won't be using them again then. Where is the cheapest truly legal place to get DRM free lossless music?

That's a pretty weak statement when you consider that P2P downloads continue to swamp the combined downloads from legal services. The fact is that noone will ever be sued s a result of using allomp3 any more than will be sued for ripping CDs to their mp3 player, so to the man in the street to all extents and purposes they are legal.

It's interesting to reflect that the strongarm legal tactics of the MPAA etc may be feeding the popularity of allof mp3; people will be scared enough to pay the bare minimum to keep themselves free from litigation but even less inclined to pay the extorotionate studio prices than before.

Since paying for tracks so that the artist receives a fraction of a percent is poor value for customers' consciences, I don't see why artists don't accept donations on their websites. I.e., without admission of anything (or discharge of liability) if you feel that you would like to chuck a quid in the direction of (say) the Red Hot Chilli Peppers to 'ease their broken hearts' ( ), then you may.

    Play.com, cd-wow.com, amazon.co.uk, hmv.co.uk, etc.

They might have copy protection (snigger) but their titles are DRM free and lossless

artists seeing none of the money doesnt bother me in the slightest. 90% of them lack and vocal or instrumental skills anyway, its the guy that makes it sound good on the sound. They get way too much from ****ty little "showing my face events" anyway

most music acts are technically bankrupt. http://archive.salon.com/tech/feature/2000/06/14/love/ might be six years old, but it's still relevant. read it.
