The power charges the wiring in the transformer coil, jumps the gap as magnetism and charges the wiring in the other coil. Obviously as it doesn't have much capacity it won't draw much but the point is the power leaks out in the form of heat, and I guess as ions and general magnetic force. It's not a totally sealed system, so if it contains a charge it will slowly leak it, the National Grid then tops up the charge and it leaks some more.

I don't know the specifics of it but basically your circuit is between the transformer and the environment around it.

Actually there is a circuit, it just goes to ground. When you plug your phone in there is a higher current draw and more resistance on the circuit, therefore it warms up more.

Yeah and then we can all build superlong Knives or swords and use these to turn the TV over without getting out of the chair

You'll all be moaning when we start getting more severe seasons. Longer winters and baking hot summers with less rain.

Saving energy (electricity included) is something we should all think about if we want to continue living our lives the way we do now.

The reason the gov are trying to push this through is to try and stop CO2 emissions (as most of our power is generated from fossil fuels) and slow down global warming.

And before you all go saying USA and Australia produce more than us, if all the smaller deleloped countries managed to cut their Carbon usage down they would have a much better chance to stop the big users.

This is the latest data for Global Warming FYI.

I think it's the growth in change thats the worry, not the actual change itself. While we might not be able to prove without any doubt that it's due to humans, we believe we can reduce the effect of warming by cutting CO2 emissions, regardless of the original source of the warming.

Its not that they will be nice, it won't be snowey winters, more likely rain and cold winds.

A hot summer sounds nice until you thihnk of whats a water shortage will do to our food production, and the knock-on price increases...

The article does not say the govt are banning remote controls to combat childhood obesity - maybe they should concentrate on combatting childhood illiteracy instead.

It just says that TVs will no longer have a standby mode; so you will have to manually switch it on before watching, but once it is on you will be able to remotely flick between Celebrity Love Island and Big Brother to your heart's content. And then after your 9 hours are up, you will have to switch off manually. It is perfectly possible to operate a TV in this fashion under today's legislation, and saves money to do so.

I wan't claiming it drew no power, but the amount it does draw is vastly less than when it's actually charging.

The point I was trying to make, is that the whole issue with standby and similar issues like the phone chargers I mentioned is the scientifically IT-illiterate press regularly mis-represent the whole thing, which can hartly help reduce consumption overall.

It would do us all if rather than repeatedly exagerating things like this, they instead reminded us how much we can save (cash and power) by having proper insulation, low power bulbs etc.
I know most of us reading this thread probably know all this, but it's amazing how many people don't - and when people on low incomes can even get the insulation pretty much entirely subsidised (and the up-front cost is the only effective excuse I can think of not to bother), it's scandalous that so many homes are so poorly insulated. If you don't believe me next winter, when it snows, look at the roofs of the houses you pass, it's quite clear which don't even have decent loft insulation.

At the end of the day, trying to persuade people to turn off their TV's is going to be hard work, and not particularly efective, by publisicing the financial incentive already available you are much more likely to get positive results.

Like our current winters then so whats the problem?

Well we're always moaning about the amount of rain in the summer so thats that problem solved. Plus we can afford to pay more for food so why moan?

P.S. Where did you get this information from or did you just make it up?

Not going to happen but if the government is serious about cutting down on obeisity in children etc its suddenly not a completely unreasonable thought.

So what, is the government going to order a mass recalling of all remote controls?

Now THAT'd be funny and grossly impractical and expensive.

I bet they'd impose another fining scheme for not getting the Standby button on the remote deactivated / removed.

*Naturally, this post contains some mild satire and sarcasm*
Yeah, those trips to the TV and back to the couch would do the nation a world of good. Hopefully make watching TV such a tedious task for a lot of people that they give it up altogether.

This comfort living rage thats been developing is going too far now, one of the big reasons for the obesity nowadays.

Take a look at the temperature figures of a much longer period and the current trends look like totally normal variation of temperature. It's been significantly higher and lower than it is now.

The overall world population has increased, meaning more body heat released into the atmosphere, maybe that's the cause, probably just as much proof. I agree it's a very good idea to cut energy usage, but for me it's more to do with preserving the fuels (coal/oil etc) we have for long enough to be able to support our needs using renewable energy, or hydrogen based fuels.
I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.
