    Printing your own photos

With digital cameras getting better and better, what are the costs involved in producing your own photos? It seems more expensive than getting thisg developed. First theres the initial cost of buying a Camera and a decent photo ink jet (lets say Epson Stylus Photo 950) then there is the paper costs which aren't cheap ....

I STILL think normal cameras are better value. APS ones are very good.

We went to Malta for our holiday in summer and while we did use the Digital Camera and some of the pics did come out quite nice ... I dunno it just seems a mega expense to me.

    Whats everyone else think?

Think it depends how you use your camera. I tend to take a lot of photographs using both my digital camera and my SLR's, I also scan my negs using a dedicated slide/neg scanner. I then only print the stuff I want. Then negs are put away and I frame the good stuff. Out of 100 digital pictures I may only print 10 enlarged to A4 and a further 20 smaller ones, I do archive the others unless they are really bad then I delete them. With my SLR I tend to use fast high quality films for big lenses or b&w, so I am more carefull about what I take photos of, I can then scan and enlarge them when I get the neg or slide developed. I also keep my eyes open for deals on high quality inkjet photo paper, dont just stick to your printers brand, there are loads of other suppliers that can be cheaper and better, try http://www.7dayshop.com
I allways use HP ink in my printer, thats because I get it freeee

I do that anyway, normally after taking a photo one can preview it and see if you need to take another one!

with a digital camera u dont waste money on getting a film developed then finding the pic is screwed in some way shape or form, you can decide as soon as you take it if it's good or if you need to take a new one.

IMO, paying that bit extra for the privilage saves you money in the long run.

I think bonusprint do 6x4 digital printouts starting at 20p a copy. Baring in mind you only pay for what you want.
