What would fighter jets be doing round here?

9 of them flew past this evening really slow and low and one of them did a kind of steep climb and then dropped back down, right over where i live...and now theres all kinds of odd stuff flying round, i cant see anything because its dark, but the noise of the things is incredible, is anyone else able to see winter hill from where they are and confirm what it is? never seen or heard any fighter planes round here before, so maybe something is happening?

    Cool!!!!!

    Training excercise maybe?

One of Jon's friends lives in Llangedwyn, she lives up a Mountain overlooking the valley where the RAF practise their flying skills, she says it's amazing to watch and listen to the noise.

Welcome to my world - i live near an RAF base. Apache gunships, Euro Fighers, All sorts, all day, everyday. Police heliptor training school too. They is always one over my head, the novelty wore off years ago.

I flew in a Jet from there myself once many years ago as a cadet. Got to fly in a Hawk (same as the red arrows use). Even took the stick for a few mins.

2 years ago i got a free 1 hour air display over my house from the Red Arrows. They were doing a pratice run before a big show in wales the next day. They were using my house as a marker, pulling stunts and putting on smoke right as they past over my roof. So low at times i could see the pilot really well as the blasted over my lawn for the 100th time. Great stuff, i have loads of photo's too. They saw us all in the garden watching and started teasing us, it was mind blowing.

Saw one lonely red arrow yesterday, just flew over low and slow. Near north weald.

I used to live at the side of stansted airport (About 6/7 years back) and the red arrows were often going in and out of there, sometimes gave a bit of a show/practice before they went in. Think they were based there at the time.

I live close to RAF Cosford, once a year it sounds and looks like World War 3 has started when they do their annual show.

It's most probably some sort of show.

If there were 9 jets then it must have been the Red Arrows as it is very rare for any other squadrons to fly around in groups of 9 (Tornados did in the Queens birthday flyby, but that was an exception). Checking the Red Arror display dates, they are doing an airshow at Hoylake, The Wirral, so I would imagine that was why they were there.

could have been the red arrows, but i thought their planes were red? these were black, or they certainly looked black, they werent going very fast and they were pretty low, so if they were red, it should have been easy enough to spot.

the other weird noises stopped just after i posted this thread, no i dea what they were either.`

We've got Navy days down in Plymouth this weekend and the harriers are using the local airport for some stuff. I live a couple of hundred yards from the end of the runway, shame my new camera doesn't get here till tomorrow or Wednesday

I'd say more likely the Bionic Pigeons the MOD are currently testing.

Well, if they were jet black, then they would have been Hawks, assuming of course they were RAF to start off with. All our other jets are generally a shade of grey. But Hawks don't make too much noise (compared with a Harrier hovering or a Typhoon in reheat...where you can feel the sound ). The noises proably stopped due to making too much noise after a certain time of night.
    Did they look like these?
