    Thumbs up Tax Refunds!

    Hi everyone,

Today is a good day! I finally received my income tax refund!

It ended up being quite a sizeable amount, more than £5k but less than £10k overall. I'm so happy! It will go a long way towards a house deposit.

    The Story

Basically I worked for DSGi for a number of years and not knowing any better (it being my first job) happily accepted how much tax I was paying as the norm. I didn't know about tax codes and tax allowances...

Anyway, I left DSGi for a nice new job, and found my tax to be much lower even though I was earning much more. I queried this with HR and they said you where on the wrong tax code. I then looked back over the P60 forms you receive each year and found myself on the wrong tax code since I had started!!!

Quick call to the tax office and just a few P60's in the post and 3months down the line after check after check was carried out to ensure I was legit... and hey presto a nice big check arrived in the post today! Wahey!

    The Question

Has this happened to anyone else on here?

If not I would emplore you to check your tax code against the suggested codes on the tax office website. You could be in for a big surprise like I was!

The tax man still owes me from the 2004/05 tax year. Every time I phone them they are very polite, and say that they will refund it in a couple of weeks but sofar it has not arrived.

It is only a few hundread but it is annoying.

blood & stone spring to mind

took my Nan & Grandad's Company a year to get money back from the tax man - and it was only after their accountant threatened to start charging interest (which legally he is allowed to do) that they paid up.

I laughed at that comment as that is near enough what I said to the people at the tax office (after about the second month of waiting) now fueled with a lot of research from the internet and a call into a tax advisor I then told them I was entitled to lost interest on the money making the refund all the more sweeter...

It's annoying to see that it works the otherway though. You would think that large companies would be able make sure everyone was on the right tax code... So issues like this didn't occur. Especially with PAYE!!

The funny thing is the tax office said that they run audits to check for these kinds of things. Apparantly I must have slipped through the net. I couldn't hold back the laughter when I heard that lame excuse...

Keep pestering them! I was told during the three month ordeal that they hadn't received my P60's and that the claim wouldn't progress without replacements. This wasn't the case... As I never sent them replacements and a few days later I received my originals in the post stating the claim was awaiting final sign off. LOL wonders will never cease!

Anyway you must keep pestering them and get names if you can. The tax offices aren't that big and if you can deal with one person it tends to be dealt with better.

Lol, isnt it ironic that if you owe them money, they are straight at your door, but if they owe you money, its the complete opposite!

I remember I started on the wrong tax code (DSGi too!), but I wasnt very happy at loosing 60 quid on my first pay, so I moaned alot and found out i could claim it back!

Tax man still owes me 4k - been trying to wring it out of them. I hate the way we pay tax before we see our earnings - it means they have the cash even though you may have been paying too much. Whilst I appreciate the need for people to pay tax I hate the way that it's their mney first and second I hate the way it's wasted.

How anyone can conciously work for the taxman I do not know.
