    Any IT managers/Recruiters here?

Since I finished college (ALevels and a City & Guilds) I've been working in IT Support (Helpdesk/Frontline) in the University Education sector.

I'm 22 and I've been there for 3yrs now and have found out there is no way im going to go up any more pay grades or progress up the ladder as I don't have a degree/HND.

All the adverts I've seen for the type of position I do say the is pay dependant on experience, and I only know pay rates in Education so they are pretty low compared to a proper business.

Just wondering how much the average wage would be for someone like me in the commercial world would be?

depends on location, job requirements, how big the company is, the terms and conditions of the job. Phone some recuitment agencies and ask for the average helpdesk job pay in the location your looking to work.
    It is Inevitable.....

Well East Anglia area. Just wanted to get a rough figure to see if I could do better.

The Recuitment Agencies round here are rubbish, I tried them before finding my current job.

Don't just look at agencies in your local area, some of the most interest I've had has been from Manchester-based agencies for jobs here in Kent.

Also www.reed.co.uk has proven to be rather successful for me too.

Get your CV out there on the net and you'll soon get contacted by agencies that find it, wherever they are based.

Well, I just hired someone with a couple or three years XP in support in a school environment, studying for his MCSA, for £17k. That said, this is in the North West - salaries are lower, but CoL is a LOT lower.
edit: Plus, if someone really works out, we tend to ramp up their pay quite quickly.

I didn't really have specific sites other than Reed, I just spent a few days adding it to whatever I could find.

Local Papers seems to be a good one though, they often have online job services.

every recruitment agency you've found - to be honest if I saw this thread and was hiring I'd be dubious about hiring as asking on an IT forum rather than hitting the agencies, perhaps shows a reason why you don't feel your going anywhere.

Sorry, but this is daft - agencies are bull**** artists par excellence. On here, you're more likely to run into people who actually work in the field, and consequently have a realistic idea of salary levels - and when my recent vacancy came up I made damned sure (with permission) that I posted it up here as well.

    ^^ What he said

I dont trust agencies further than I can spit them.

1st line support roles are an entry level position and as such don't tend to pay very well.

Our 1st line guys aren't much more than phone jockeys , so I wouldn't include them in calculation - but the 2nd line ones who would have ( in theory if they wern't such numpties ) similar skills are on between 17k and 19k ( my employer is notoriously tight )

nichomach got it spot on as to why I was asking on here, i remember seeing a few posts mentioning about being managers and knew I'd get a proper responce. Agencies are a cheeky buggers, and just out to make money so wont be realistic (we had an agency guy cover when I was in hospital, who we were paying £14/hr he was only getting £8.50 of that!)

I guess 1st Line is HelpDesk? Im not really used to these terms, could you explain them?

(God I feel stupid again asking all this, but things are so different where I work as our IT Support is quite fragmented and specialised)

I totally agree, agencies are slime, but getting the CV to as many of them as possible and getting feedback on jobs/positiions salleries thats AVAILABLE to him is better than people saying "oooh my company would pay you X" or "I think your worth X+1" its not really important what your worth or what the going rate is, its what you can get, if you think your worth 15K but would settle for 13K then anything within that bracket is fine if you will only accept 15K then thats the price. It doesn't matter what people think, if the jobs in your area are paying 13K - then the decision is simple sit where you are and wait, or apply for the job for 13k, or move to a location with different oppertunities.

Agencies are slime I agree but they are also ruthless as they want to fill positions so if your not battering them you don't "appear" (note appearence doesn't mean your not) that bothered about changing jobs
