Galant, don't misunderstand me, the thread did not break any rules in it's content.
The discussion was heading along two very separate routes, one on the topic of depression and the other on religion.
The thread was moved to clean it up and sort it out, that's all.
As Deck said, the thread broke no rules as such, but it DID start to tread on dangerous ground.
Some other forums have a strict rule on "no medical threads". We'd really rather not go down that route BUT there are inherent dangers in medical threads.
OcUK have that rule, for instance, for VERY good reason. During a debate on a medical issue in Speakers Corner, while I was the Don there, I received a PM from a Doctor expressing considerable reservations about the advisability of allowing medical threads, especially where people start to give medical advice. Such advice is almost bound to be unqualified, probably wrong and possibly dangerous, even deadly. That particular thread was, IIRC, related to depression, but we also had "I've been getting chest pains, what could it be and what should I do?" threads.
The comments were passed on to the dons in the DR, debated at some length and eventually Spie decided on the "no medical threads" rule and I cannot honestly say I disagreed with him at all.
You see, if you allow threads like that, then inevitably some people will give their "advice". If someone acts on that advice, and is hurt (or worse) as a result, then the web forum, as publisher, could be held liable for that advice and sued. It not only has implications for the poor sap relying on such "advice", but for the forum as a whole. It could result in Hexus getting shut down completely if such a situation went wrong.
So, I'm in the process of cleaning up that thread (to separate the initial material from the religious hijacking), AND we are discussing if the thread should be returned at all, and if there needs to be any guidance on the allowability of similar threads in the future, or limitations in how far people can go.
We seriously do NOT want to start adding rules, and for some time, the Admin team have had their fingers crossed that issues like this would simply not come up. But it's an uncomfortable fact that there are, like it or not, situations where we simply have to draw the line. This may be one of them.
