    Postal Mailing lists...

I got some postal mail from Sky today, with my full name and address on - as I've never been subscribed to Sky and only been in my new house for about 6 months, I'm wondering how I find out who's mailing list I'm on and why they're giving out my address?

I phoned Sky and they said they didn't know why I would have recieved it. The last time this happened I ended up with about 6 companies posting me junk, and phoned them up and they were able to tell me which scumbag company was giving out my address details - the most annoying thing about this is that I ALWAYS tick the boxes that say I DON'T want other companies to post me stuff!

Funny you should mention this, the other day I got a letter from Comet saying my manufacturers warranty had expired on a TV and did I want to extend it. Only problem with that being I have never bought a thing from Comet, let alone a TV. My dad on the other hand had and it turned out to be for a TV he bought last year. The scary thing is how did Comet manage to get that mixed up with me, we may live at the same address but still. The dodgiest thing is how did Comet manage to know who I was, and how much do they know about me considering I have never had any dealings with them in my life. My dad was going to give them a ring and scare them a bit saying it's an invasion of privacy for revealing something about him to me, however trivial it may be.

there is a thing called data protection act...if you tell these people to get lost they have to. as well as remove any info they have on you. failing that there is a mailing preference list that you can sign onto which basically removes you from these lists of addresses in cr*p companies all over the place, a bit like the telephone one only for mail...duh...

I'm pretty sure legally any company holding information on you has to on request show you everything they hold. Would be interesting to find out exactly how much Comet have on me considering I have never been a customer. A company you have purchased goods from in the past holding data on you is one thing, but for a company with no connection with you to is quite another.

I had an envelope come through the door the other day just addressed to something along the lines of "Uni Student" with a full address on, etc, and in it were just coupons and crap for local clubs. Now, firstly where did they get my address from, as I damn well know it's not one of these clubs as I have never set foot in them.

Deffinately going to take this up with my Uni though, someone is in on it.

The reason you get it is the electoral roll.

just got some more junk mail today from MacWarehouse, which points me in the direction to my previous Mac subscription. Both of the post things had numbers 271... somewhere in the address, so I phoned the publishing company and they said they'd remove me from their list... funny how i ended up on the list though as I always make sure I tick the box that says "no i don't want junk mail from other companies..."

If you are on the electoral roll then these companies will extract your details from it and send you crap. (Not literally! )
