Someone took £500 from my (visa) debit card down south (Gala Group, Woking) yet my card is ALWAYs in my wallet. So I don't know how they got the details but I did use my card a lot on-line. I got the money back within a couple of weeks, and got a new card and pin. I wonder how difficult it is for people to have a program generating card numbers / details and then go somewhere dodgy where they don't need your address? For example when you go into Asda for some shopping they don't check your address do they?

I had CapitalOne ring me up about a month go asking me whether I'd used my card in southend car phone warehouse to buy a phone for £500. Obviously working for a mobile phone company myself, I wouldn't have dreamed of doing so.
I'd only used the card in one place prior - a BP petrol station. So it was easily traceable.
Another thing to note is... Chip and Pin doesn't help at all, most places will swipe if the card produces "chip error" on the machine, which is easily achievable with a certain sharp tool and a hammer. This is how many fraudsters are still getting away with cloning cards.
woo for the more desirable parts of southend
Luckily I haven't (to date anyhow) had any problems, but I don't use my card on the net much - mainly parents which has protection against that sort of thing

How many people on Hexus have experienced CC fraud? did you ever have
any companies you suspected?
Heres a couple of threads from another forum where this sort of thing seems
to have gone on.

Interesting update - Tescos "scan yer own" counters seem to be having chip & pin units fitted , now just hope they can do the same for the petrol pumps !

I just can't bang in my code as fast as the plastic ones they use in other shops and train stations

Hi My HSBC card was declined online when i telephoned them they told me that they suspected fraudulent use & blocked it
they had 4 pre authorisations 4 x £1 and £1.01 then a purchase at 02buynet for £165 i new nothing about these
only used the card online and one warehouse in the last few weeks as well
thankfully the fraud checks stopped the use but i am concerned as to how the number was found?
card now cancelled but have to wait a week for a new one
Cheers

1) Register a premium rate phone line.
2) Buy a PAYG phone, providing false details.
3) Copy some mug's credit card details when they use it in your petrol station, restaurant or takeaway.
4) Buy £50 airtime and use it to call your premium rate number, pocketing the income. Rinse and repeat.
I think that you are more likely to encounter CC fraud from it being abused by an online company or at company call centers. Rather than phishing or trojan/keyloggers.
I got a call from the Barclaycard security department yesterday, within 30 minutes of my card number being fraudulently used. Apparently, the Christian Aid thing is a 'normal' check with these scammers to see if the card is 'live'. They then go on to hit saleable items, such as PAYG mobile phones. Sometimes these are sold on, I am told, other times they are used to call an 'owned' premium rate number, and thus get the cash back.
Slainthe!

This was the second attempted transaction on my card, which Barclaycard tell me has to have had the details stolen on a 'physical', rather than online, transaction. Given I only use it online or to buy petrol, the implication is clear, and I have contacted Shell's HO Fraud Department, since I use one petrol station most of the year.
What does puzzle me is that, when I Googled O2buynet, this was the only hit, I couldn't find a website to match. Barclaycard tell me they are in Runcorn, but I've not been able to find them through DQ either.
