I thought i heard something about them being illegal?
I thought i heard something about them being illegal?
As far as I know they are, but there was going to be legislation to change that, just not sure if its been passed yet - as they are considered setting up a pirate radio station
Under the old law (as I understand it) it is illegal for a UK based company to sell one, but you can import them with relatively minor hassle from the Channel Islands, and its not illegal to own one, though it may be to use it.
Dave
All fm transmitters marketed for use with ipods will always be illegal, due the the amount of crap there owners listen too
However due to the fact it would be impossible to enforce the old law in respect to other very low power/short range transmitters the old law will exclude. them (noting the exception above).
Note that if you are caught listening to crap music your car will be pulled over and searched for ipod marketed transmitters, which, along with the ipod, will then be destroyed
It has *never* been illegal to sell them, ever. It is currently only illegal to use.
if this is true then Amazon are breaking the law:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-TuneC...&s=electronics
if you check on the page its sold and dispatched from Amazon.co.uk NOT Amazon Jersey

Perhaps they are then, all I know is that when I ordered mine there was a note sent with it explaining why it had been dispatched from Jersey rather than the UK, and apologising if it took longer to deliver as a result.
Dave
They are still illegal at the moment I believe, but due to a loophole in the law its perfectly legal to sell them. You just cant use them in the UK. You can legally use them in other parts of the EU though and soon you will be able to use them in the UK.

PCWorld is breaking the law then. I bought a Belkin TuneCast II FM Transmitter from them last weekend. It did have a sticker over the screen telling you to check with your local legislation to make sure you were allowed to use it.
I'll have to try it in a few more cars, but it didn't work very well in the Astra hire car i had last week. Very weak signal and had loads of interference. It was also very over priced, but i didn't have a lot of choice, no time to order online before going away for the week. It's also annoying it runs off 12v external supply instead of the regular 5v that my Archos and loads of other items run at.
i have the tunecast as well mate, i had to velcro mine under my radio to get the best sound, it must have about a 5inch radius or someting its quite poor

Hey Funkstar - i noticed that massive Tunecast Display in PC World today. I hope you did not pay the "Amazing!" £29.99 price - they are available on-line for £9.99
I have one and it has been excellent, way better than i ever thought. You just need to find a free signal band and turn the volume down quite a bit on the MP3 player - many people mistake the distortion as being a signal problem with these.

Unfortunitely i did pay that, like i said, didn't have a lot of choice. Couldn't find any others localy, and it was about 17:00 on Saturday, i was traveling on Sunday morning in a hare car with only a CD player and normal FM radio
as far as the legallity og the actual transmitter goes, i dare say youre probably ok. There is of course the argument thats illegal to braodcast copyrighted music without permission. But i dont reckon thats a big deal eihther. If youre that worried maplins sell one that connects directly into the aerial socket (pasthrough) on the radio.
I thought I read somewhere about a month ago the law had been changed now to allow low power transmitters such as FM transmitters.
I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.
