Kaspersky works fine for me, yeah you pay, but hey.

AV software is just a waste of resources imo, dont go on dodgy websites and dont download dodgy files and you will be fine, if your paranoid just use a online scanner every now and again.
Not so, I have no virus's on any of my machines and dont visit dodgy websites.
If you have a router then you pretty much have a hardware firewall so your machine is invisible to most of the internet, so your pretty safe that way, therefore pretty much the only way your going to get a virus is eather by email or browsing.
With email your ISP should have AV filtering so will filter out anything prior to you reciving it, and if anything does get through with a attachment from a sender you dont know then tbh you deserve the virus if you open it.
Browsing, unless your a pikey and use a lot of the P2P / Warez sites or go on dodgy pr0n sites then your not gonna get a virus that way.
So tell me how else are you gonna get a virus, they dont just appear on your PC by magic you know
by visting a website you know and trust to find out the new virus that injects itself into SQL has managed to infect them b4 there host patched it out.
so many possibilities your bound to become a statistic without one at some stage,

great performace thanks, i know how to setup kaspersky
and i aint paranoid, i just cant be arsed to manaully check for problems
I also used to use AVG but switched to Avast
There is a large trend these days of 'Drive by download' whereby an exploit is used to infect 000s of websites without breaking them with a link to a virus alot of these are small business/hobbist and some large trustworthy ones rather than the usual dodgy sites we all know to avoid.
So running no AV is just like thinking you wont get killed in london because you dont go down the dodgy end - oxford street is safe right?

Use Avira. It's got a great detection rate, better than Avast. Minimal resource impact IMHO, and I've tried Avast, AVG, Avira, McAfee, Symantec.
Although you should also strongly consider blocking the popup license reminder that runs every time it updates. Very annoying otherwise, and the only downside to Avira.
Google avnotify.exe software restriction policy... or wait, I just did, see here:
Disable the Avira Antivir PE Classic avnotify nag screen
Best free antivirus?
Linux.
if there are linux lurkers then there must be more mac fanboys out there for this topic
