Haha very devious I like it. I don't see how you are going to get a Big LCD through though. Digital cameras laptops etc I can see no problems with. How big is the price difference between CPUs RAM etc?

Well a single DVD is rather easy, and as the recent comparison was started by discussion of Vista it's not a problem

Though they might have a right to ask why you were taking an installation DVD with you on holiday..

Well, it's Windows... Going abroad without a disc to re-install the OS is just asking for trouble!

How many of your have ever been stopped at customs?

I never have, once I was close to, they stopped me, then they saw I was with a big group so if they stopped me, everyone else would have to wait and clog up the whole place lol. But usually theres no customs people even there.
Anway, yeah, i never bring back boxes.

I was asked once, but that may have been because I was coming back from Amsterdam alone wearing an England shirt, guess the guy thought I was smuggling other substances in. Actually I had only connected at Amsterdam, coming from Germany so he didn't make me empty everything.

Moreover if you can advice the seller in the US that the item is for GIFT in UK then you dont pay any customs.

if you go can you bring me something too!!! lol
Just to be clear, the general rule is that gifts are not exempt from either import duty or VAT.

However, EU rules allow for free import of giftys provided that a number of criteria are met. One is that the item must not be paid for in any way, directly or indirectly. Another is that it MUST come from a private seller, so if you have a receipt it had better not be in your name.

Finally, and it's a bit of a doozy, the limit on the value of the item is 45 Euros. So, if we're talking about 24" LCDs, I'd guess they're going to exceed that limit just a smidgeon.

No way can the "gift" thing be assured of working.

Having said that, there's always a chance, either by post or in person, that items will slip through without inspection. And, if they are inspected, there's always a chance you can waffle about gifts and you MIGHT get lucky. You just can't rely on it, and have no basis for objection if you get duty and VAT levied. You'd just have to pay it.

Cheaper to just buy from the US and get them to ship it than to faf around flying over there, even with customs lumping some tax on top. I got my current comp case from the US (cost of roughly $500 inc shipping) and the customs charge was about £80, so it's not a huge amount extra.

I wonder what the situation is if you got someone to buy an item for you, then bought it from them as "second-hand", with documentation to support that?

I bought a second-hand camera in the US some years ago. When I arrived at customs, I went through red, declared it and showed them the receipt. It was marginally over the limit, but I was waived through.

And that technique is, clearly, open to some abuse.

However, I may have just got lucky. Anyone trying this has to remember that HMRC have astonishing powers. If you were to try that and get told you owed import duty and VAT, your choice would essentially be to pay it and argue about it later, through the courts if necessary, or refuse to pay it and probably have the items held by customs, or just pay up and be done with it.

Short of gross illegality, there simply is no surefire way of importing anything (that exceeds the limits) without paying the necessary duty.

Oh, and be aware if you decide to "pre-date" that second-hand receipt to drop the price, it's not beyond the bounds of possibility that Customs could look up serial numbers and dates of manufacture. If you claim to have bought a camera that's a year older than it's actual age, you could find yourself in unpleasantly deep and stinky kaka.

So what is the approx value of a 24" LCD TV that is now scrap because 'the mainboard is broken' and you oh-so-unfortunately dont have any cables to prove it? and you are only bringing it back because you are acting as a courier for an elderly decrepid friend who happens to have an OCD for playing with broken hardware?
